The expression “the early bird gets the worm” means that the people first to find and latch on to a good idea benefit the most from it

What about the poor worm that gets eaten though? This may mean that the worm (idea), once eaten by the early adopters, may become stagnant and is never able to evolve past its early elements

This could be a reference to hip-hop – Cryptic may feel that the art form is held back by always adhering to old techniques and topics that don’t move the genre forward

To “reinvent the wheel” is an expression meaning to needlessly try to improve an already perfectly established concept, idea, or object

Cryptic doesn’t want to re-invent the wheel (hip hop being the wheel) but instead wants to enjoy the bumpy rides (the ups and downs of the music business) that it provides.

However, he’s not JUST sitting back and relaxing – he does want to make some improvements to hip-hop music that will make the “bumpy ride” smoother

One could also view the lines as a metaphor for writing rhymes. Writing a rap verse is a fairly established entity, but Cryptic wants to gain something by creating his own verses

Denis Leary and Dennis Miller are both comedian/entertainers, while Dennis the Menace is a trouble-making cartoon

All three are cynical. Leary is best known for rants about how much he hates everyday life. Miller has a similar comedic style, and is also known for his unconventional political views: despite being passionately socially liberal, Miller is in favour of interventionist wars and still defends the Iraq War. Dennis the Menace’s philosophy sharply divides the world into go-getting menaces and the evil “softies” who stand in their way.

Sigmund Freud first introduced the “Oedipus complex”, named after the character in Greek mythology, which suggests that boys unconsciously want to kill their father and have sexual relations with their mother

Cryptic applies this to our planet, where nature is the mother and human kind is her child. Humans “fuck” their own mother by being reckless and ignoring her; they allow pollution, garbage, etc. to break her

In Cinderella, a poor girl is allowed one night of luxury before returning to her unhappy life. Vast accuses other rappers of thinking they are going to blow up and get rich because of their skills

During Cinderella’s fantasy night, she loses a glass slipper. A prince falls in love with her, finds the slipper, and searches for her by trying to find a woman whom the slipper fits. Vast means that after he hears a rapper spit a capella (without a beat) is when their true skill will be revealed

A bum is a poor homeless person. A nomad, which sounds much cooler, is just like a bum, but they have no home because they are constantly traveling, not necessarily because they are poor

Vast is speaking metaphorically here. He travels around lyrically, coming up with rhymes freely (“off dome” means without being written/rehearsed; free-styling), or letting his free association thoughts (homeless as a metaphor for unrestrained) roam empty paper (he writes the rhymes down)

This relates to the “Ghost in the Machine” theme that runs through this album

The body is mechanical – so Vast writes rhymes with his metallic body. This also could mean that Vast “writes” (shoots) his gun, since “metal” is slang for gun

The soul is not mechanical, so it doesn’t break down/rust

His raps being dusty means they are connected to old-school hip-hop

A dreamcatcher is a Native American object that is meant to ward off harm and evil. It’s actually supposed to catch nightmares, so that they don’t enter a person’s mind

Tyler IS that dreamcatcher, catching all the nightmares that are meant for others. This idea is kind of like The Catcher in the Rye

Dreamcatcher is also the name of a Stephen King novel (and film based on the novel)

A reference to the phrase “it’s over when the fat lady sings”, meaning that things are never over until they’re officially over. It came from opera, where an overweight women closed a performance.

This following the songs thematic “when pig’s fly” adage, means that the impossible is possible, so you shouldn’t assume that your life is over before it actually is.
