Throughout his career Jay Z claimed that he originally came up with rhymes while on the corner dealing drugs.

This line evokes an image of a young Hova on a Brooklyn street corner, “crack in his palm, watching the long arm of the law” while bobbing his head and rhyming to himself.

The song that made Jay-Z a superstar. Famously sampling “It’s a Hard Knock Life” from the Annie movie (1982), Jay raps about his rags-to-riches story (it’s slightly different than Annie’s). Jay-Z transposes this into a song about how he overcame life in the ghetto to achieve massive success

Jay, via Vibe:

[One of my sister’s names is Andrea], but we call her Annie. That’s how the Annie sample came about. When I seen that on TV, I was like, ‘Annie?’ And then, I watched the movie. […] Any person that goes from ashy to classy or, you know, is from the orphanage or the projects—it’s pretty similar.

As detailed in Decoded, to clear the ‘Annie’ sample, Jay wrote a letter to the song’s copyright holders, telling them that he’d seen the musical on Broadway as a child and written a competition-winning essay on it at school.

Eminem’s issues with his mom are well documented. He has bashed her in his lyrics many times, leading to her filing a defamation lawsuit against him.

Also a continuation of the Norman Bates reference above, since in the movie Psycho II, Norman Bates hits his mother over the head with a shovel near the climax of the film.

In the clean version of the videoclip, this whole second line was censured.

This incident is also mentioned by Em in an earlier, unreleased song titled “Demon Inside”. He references Norman hitting his mother in the head with a shovel:

I heard ‘em yell “Welcome to the Norman Bates Motel!”
I ring the bell for service and I was greeted by his mother
Covered in dry blood, head still dented from the shovel

Eminem predicts that once his debut The Slim Shady LP drops he is going to take the game over. (Technically his first solo release was Infinite but the SSLP was his first release under Aftermath).

Cage is a white rapper that accused Eminem of stealing his style. Cage had similar horrorcore lyrics and rapping style on his debut, and a persona similar to Slim Shady.

Here, Eminem refutes the suggestion he stole Cage’s style, admitting that he bought Cage’s album but saying he considered it so worthless that he just treated it like a blank tape and recorded his own music over it. (Back in the day you could actually record over cassette tapes)

Norman Bates is a fictional serial killer from the movie Psycho that was far from normal. Combine a killer like Norman and a deformed body to go with it? Pretty far from your average joe.

Em continues the Bates reference a few lines down.

He would go on to include a similar line in Kill You on the Marshall Mathers LP.

This is all a reference to the O.J. Simpson murder trial, where the famous retired football player was acquitted of murder (even though everyone believed he was guilty). Eminem claims that he was the one who committed the murder.

A few important things here:

  • The White Bronco is the car O.J. tried to escape the police in
  • Nicole Brown is the name of O.J.’s ex-wife who was killed
  • Ronald Goldman was the name of a waiter that O.J. was accused of murder after he was found dead right outside of Nicole’s door (the two were close, some claim they were lovers)
  • Marcus Allen is a former NFL player and friend of Simpson. O.J. asked him to say that he had sex with Nicole and that Marcus and O.J. were still good friends to persuade the jurors that O.J. was not a jealous ex
  • Marcus refused and ended his friendship with O.J.
  • According to the documentary linked here, Nicole Brown did have an affair with Marcus Allen. This is based on allegations of friends and two diary entries that hint at a possible affair with Marcus, although they don’t say so outright. According to the article linked just above, Allen’s wife denied that the two had an affair.

Em’s version takes the rumors surrounding the O.J. case and creates a violent crime that only Slim Shady is capable of.

In case you didn’t think this line was offensive enough, just know that the original version was “Me and Marcus Allen were butt-fucking Nicole.”

Probably a reference to a famous line from his hit single “My Name Is”: “I just drank a fifth of vodka, dare me to drive?”. Em sarcastically suggests that everyone should drink and drive because he said it on a song once.
