This song chronicles the misadventures of a young lad who attracts women like a magnet everywhere he goes without even trying—yet he just cannot close the deal. All he needs is a little encouragement from Young MC!

It features guest vocals by Crystal Blake and bass guitar by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, both of whom also appear in the video.

The song is Young’s biggest hit, reaching number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and topping the charts in Australia. The single was certified Platinum on January 12, 1990 by the RIAA, and Gold on September 18, 1989.

In 2008, it was ranked number 47 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop, and number 60 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of the 80’s.

The main guitar riff in the song is sampled from “Found a Child” by Ballin' Jack.

This Seals & Croft song was covered in a harder rock/soulful style by The Isley Brothers as a single in 1974. Issued also on their 1973 album, 3 + 3, it reached number sixty on the pop singles chart, number ten on the R&B singles chart, and number sixteen on the UK singles chart. The Isleys' version is notable not only for the harmonies of the three vocal Isleys O'Kelly, Rudolph and lead singer Ronald but also for the guitar solo by younger brother Ernie.

Seals & Crofts' original version reached number six on the U.S. pop singles chart. Bruce Eder of Allmusic referred to it as “one of those relentlessly appealing 1970s harmony-rock anthems,” “appropriately ubiquitous on the radio and in the memory”. One of the distinctive backing instruments on Summer Breeze is a child’s toy piano. The single reached #6 pop, #4 easy listening on the U.S. Billboard charts in autumn 1972.

“Twist and Shout” is a song written by Phil Medley and Bert Russell (stage name for Bert Berns). It was originally titled “Shake It Up, Baby” and recorded by the Top Notes and then covered by The Isley Brothers.

Russell had been very unhappy with the producing done by Phil Spector on the version of the song by The Top Notes, which he felt led to the songs commercial failure. When the Isley Brothers decided to record the song in 1962, Russell opted to produce, and thus demonstrate to Spector what he had intended to be the “sound” of the record. The resulting recording captured the verve of an Isley Brothers performance, and became the trio’s first record to reach a Top 20 position in the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

The Isley Brothers' version, with Ronald Isley on lead vocals, was the first major hit recording of the song, peaking at No. 17 on the U.S. pop top 40 charts, and No. 2 on the US R&B charts. The song quickly became a frequently covered R&B tune in the early 1960s.


Perhaps the most famous version of this song is the cover by The Beatles, which appears as track seven, side two of Please Please Me and was the opening track of most of their early live sets.

Alpha and beta are stages of development. While alpha signifies the very beginning of a product, beta describes the last building stages of an in-process product; the moments before its official release.

The alpha stage of whites — referred to here as “the Devil” — began with their black ancestors living in Africa. Ras continued to then describe their development of the white skin and journey upwards into Europe, thus completing their beta stage.

This displays a change in the content of the song: Ras began with a breakdown of man’s pre-homo sapien stages, and is now continuing with more modern times.
