One thing I always despise about Nas stans, is the sheer inaccuracy and delusions, theorizing Hov rapped like Nas in anyway after Illmatic.

He didn’t structure his classics the way Illmatic was, none of the flows or deliveries are remotely similar, completely different beat selections, lyrical expressions, choices of themes and topics, rhyme schemes, etc.

“Suddenly got smooth” is attributed to Biggie (RTD and Illmatic dropped same year). In contrast, Hov’s rapping style was casual, but tense, constantly shifting in vibe – very deliberate, done in advance.

Yeah, he borrowed a line, so what? Rakim is why Nas sampled that line for “N.Y. State of Mind”.

@TheeMurkiness In my opinion, Jay was more influenced by Notorious BIG, Big L, Kane, Rakim, EPMD, and probably some lesser known local rappers he was occasionally cyphering with.

“7 Minute Freestyle” with Big L came out in 1995, and Jay was still using the fast-paced flow.

Personally, I think when Jaz-O got shut down by the music industry, Jay began to cast out for other ways of becoming a successful rapper. When he created Roc-A-Fella in 1995 (a year after Illmatic), he began to study the game and work out how to become successful in it. His first 4 singles all failed (“In My Lifetime,” the remix, “I Can’t Get With That,” and “Dead Presidents”), and none of them were really similar to Nas' style. When Jay did eventually hit on a hot song with “Ain’t No,” it was absolutely nothing like Nas had done.

I’ve never actually heard anyone say Nas influenced Jay, or at least anyone with any credibility. No-one around Jay at the time (Dame, Kareem, Hip Hop, Irv, Ski, Clark Kent, Jaz, Big, Premier, Foxy, Bleek etc etc) ever mentioned Nas as an influence. Jay said “I had the Illmatic, on bootleg, it was so ahead, thought we was all dead.” He doesn’t appear to be influenced by him in any way though. Jay’s “mafioso” persona may have been a reaction to Nas' success, but it’s not like rapping about the streets was revolutionised or improved by Nas in 1994.

Agree. I will forever place Nas in my Top 5 and respect his influence on the game, but I just don’t see a huge, career-changing influence given to either Hov or Nas by the other. They are, and always have been, different in style, lyrical content, production choices, lifestyle, et cetera.

I believe a lot of Hov slowing down and “smoothing out” was due to the lack of success of his early, early singles. He was simply fitting too much content into each line and the jewels went over the heads of the average listener. He realized he needed to “dumb down,” both so he could be more understood, and so he could achieve a level of success that would justify leaving the lucrative drug game.

Then in early ‘95 we got “In My Lifetime” and “Dead Presidents,” which weren’t commercially successful by any means, but began to showcase the Mafioso style he would master on RD. I’d say that style would align more with hearing and being influenced by Big’s RTD, not from the more gritty Illmatic.

Also, as a sidenote, Nas has said RD is one of his favorite albums of all time, and when he first heard Jay he knew he was going to be a major player in the rap game. Real recognized real.
