A backpacker is based on a fashion style popular in the mid to late 90s where people involved in hip-hop wore large backpacks. Originated by Graffiti writers who kept all their cans in backpacks, the style caught on quick with the suburbanites and rock kids who didn’t want to stray too far from their style but still wanted to have a hip-hop flavor.

People use it now as a derogatory term for nerd-rappers, hippy-hoppers, and other fringe hip-hop followers, referencing the fact most of the listeners are suburbanites buying or co-opting into a certain style.

Gambino’s clothing style is what some would consider “all white” (short shorts, small tees) like the cast of all the shows on the network CW, like 90210, Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, etc.

This is effectively the title track from Camp. Reminiscent of the Kanye West track “Last Call” off The College Dropout

This story was actually not written by CG, but by his good friend and DERRICK comedy alum DC Pierson. (CG credits him in the liner notes.)

The boy’s story continues on Because the Internet.

Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth were deeply upset with the death of close friend Troy Dixon aka Trouble T Roy of Heavy D (and the Boyz), who died from an accidental fall at a concert. They made this song to cope with the pain of losing him.

I had a friend of mine that passed away, and it was a shock to the community. I was kind of depressed when I made it. And to this day, I can’t believe I made it through, the way I was feeling. I guess it was for my boy. When I found the record by Tom Scott, basically I just heard something incredible that touched me and made me cry. It had such a beautiful bassline, and I started with that first. I found some other sounds and then heard some sax in there and used that. Next thing you know, I have a beautiful beat made. When I mixed the song down, I had Charlie Brown from Leaders of the New School in the session with me, and we all just started crying.“ - Pete Rock

“Like Smoke” is the first of two collaborations between Amy Winehouse and American rapper Nas, with their final collaboration “Cherry Wine” being released a few months later. Despite being released first, “Like Smoke” was originally a solo song for Winehouse recorded in 2008 and not in the works to be a collaboration, but following Winehouse’s untimely demise in 2011, Nas hopped on and recorded his verses.

Nas was the inspiration behind Winehouse’s 2006 hit “Me & Mr. Jones,” which transcended their friendship and would later spark their collaborations.

Nas sat down with RapGenius in January 2012 and praised Winehouse as an artist and a friend, adding:

I met someone who shared my same birthday, who – we had no competition, we had no beef, we had no tension, nothing like that. It was just, it was like we always knew we was supposed to be cool. And that’s as far as it goes, you know, she was like a sister to me.

Another double entendre by Rocky. On one hand it means his rap career is about to blow up like a Bin Laden who represents suicidal terrorists. On the other it means that he smokes the Bin Laden weed which is potent weed. Afghanistan was exploding as the number one exporter of marijuana around this time. (much like Three 6 Mafia).
