A fin is a part of a shark. It is a notorious signal of one’s presence. “Fin” is also Spanish for “end.” This poem has the shark resisting against his limitations as greatly as he can, hunting down the big king of institutional society, the liger.

This is essentially my character, my shark, staying the king. Everyone is after him.

This piece serves as a sort of battle arena where each writer functions as a competing shark, a competing mentality, aiming to usurp the Reefer-Tip Shark.

This is the height of the competitive spirit in the work.

Mick wants to skip the small talk and cut straight to the chase: he wants her to give her phone number to him.

This is interesting as a play on physical vs. digital communications. Rather than interacting with her in person (visiting), he wants to call and/or text her. This fits into the theme of Mick’s youth, as young kids these days are often more comfortable with talking online than in person.

Verbal Kent admits he’s made some decisions in his live which weren’t the best but at least he can recognize where he went wrong in hindsight.

The “past dues” refers to unpaid debts, likely, but not limited to monetary debts. Debt is a hole that one digs deeper and deeper.

The guillotine is a device used to execute people via beheading. It was used most prominently in the French Revolution of 1789. The idea of it in this poem is that it’s supposed to bring about an end of some sort of tyranny.

This would be something desired because that means more justice. It is also something to be afraid of because it means violence and a history of oppression.

A guillotine is not a means of suicide, but this line does weigh the value of death, though not at one’s own hands.

Something being in a book solidifies it. It’s set in stone, if you will. This makes the idea seem more easily accomplished, more accessible, more easily repeated.

There being in a book is something to hope for because that means that people are thinking about it and aspiring for it. It’s something to be feared because it detracts away from its ethereal aspect.

A name is a way of representing an idea, but part of that is lost in translation. For example, while Detroit Leprechaun may be a good way to describe me and a way that other people will recognize who you’re talking about, the name fails to completely represent me. Having no name could be desired in order to not be simplified or diluted.

The downside to having no name is that it becomes difficult to be remembered. Being nameless makes a concept intangible on a whole new level. Being without a name makes you like a ghost.

Knowledge is often desired, wanting to better understand everything; however, knowing absolutely and certainly seems depressing. It beckons the question, “what’s the point?” The chase, the pursuit is where the love is.

@Bradapalooza told me once that it seemed like I have been having an absolute rebellion against punctuation, so I tried to utilize it a bit here. It’s pretty simple stuff to it, but hey, this poem is a bit of complex simplicity. The question mark here is supposed to display the idea of uncertainty.

A thing one might desire is to no longer suffer and feel morose. This is also something to be afraid of because it could mean that you are numb and emotionless ~ practically dead.

To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering. -Nietzsche

As several thinkers have believed, such as Albert Camus with the Myth of Sisyphus and Friedrich Nietzsche’s overall view, triumphing over obstacles, things that may make us very sad, is that from which he extract happiness.
