being from a rough area, it’s constantly reinforced in various subtle and unsubtle ways, that you aren’t shit, and that you can’t become shit. As continued in the next couple of lines, family, media, the government/courts, police, and the schooling system, all convince kids from the hood that they have no chance of amounting to anything. This takes deep roots, and results in urban youths giving up on becoming anything, and turning to drugs and violence, that eventually lands them either dead or in prison.

Many from the hood identify heavily with being ghetto/gangster. They are from the hood before they are anything else. Being from the hood doesn’t define who you are, or more importantly, what you can be.

Reference to Mr. Drummond, the Diff'rent Strokes character, who saved little black kids in a slightly more literal manner.

exact word is unclear (help!) but the clear message is that he ran with dudes who were too “cool” for a real job, and wanted the easy money that comes with slinging and doing crooked shit. understandably, in their defense.

the former refers to the fact that his raps feed the soul. like literal soul food. past that, I can’t quite make out what’s being said.
