Although the song is a fictional account of a jail-break, the song references an actual prison (Millhaven Institution), where one of the most historic jailbreaks in Canadian history occurred.
The number of escaped inmates and the year of the escape (“Twelve men broke loose in ‘73”) referenced in the song were purposely different than the real event, as the actual escape involved 14 men and occurred in 1972. This was done both to reinforce that the song was fictional, and also for the purpose of meter and to rhyme with the next line of the song (“…from Millhaven maximum security.”)
