Papoose lays down a nice pun by saying that the money will call him, they want Papoose to collect them. He cements this pun by implying he can not talk to someone on the phone, because he’s already talking with money on the phone… kinda non-realistic, but it gets the points across.

Writer/producer Ed Townsend who worked on the Let’s Get It On album with Marvin Gaye revealed in an interview that Gaye first turned this track down, as he appeared to not sing songs that have a personal affection with him. And apparently this song didn’t.

Townsend wrote the song after an encounter with a woman who convinced Townsend that they could not “build happiness on the misery of others”, as they both were in relationships with other people. He told her she was right, and as he wanted to leave she asked if that was all she had to say. To which he responded, “No…if I should die tonight, Lord, before my time, I won’t die blue ‘cause I’ve know you”.

Gaye later told Townsend to “get that song out. [Because] I can sing that sonovabitch now!”. This was because at the time the two were recording Let’s Get It On, Gaye met his second wife, Janis Hunter, and felt that way about her.
