Papoose lays down a nice pun by saying that the money will call him, they want Papoose to collect them. He cements this pun by implying he can not talk to someone on the phone, because he’s already talking with money on the phone… kinda non-realistic, but it gets the points across.

“If I Should Die Tonight” is the third track off of the classic ‘73 Marvin Gaye album Let’s Get It On. The song is written and produced by Marvin Gaye himself and producer Ed Townsend.

Townsend notes that initially Gaye couldn’t wrap his mind around the idea of loving a woman so much, that he could accept a premature death simply because he had known her in the biblical sense.

But after meeting Janis Hunter, Gaye purportedly told Townsend, “Get that tape. I can sing that son of a bitch now” (linear notes Let’s Get It On Deluxe Edition). In the initial mastering of Let’s Get It On, the final verse of “If I Should Die Tonight” was “accidentally” deleted. The original version of the song stood on its own for more than twenty years until, the deleted verse was re-inserted in a re-mastered CD of the recording in 1994. – Mark Anthony Neal

Gaye is a lucky man, as he in fact has seen his dream, while millions of others won’t ever. His, and everybody else’s “dream” is their love of their lives, the person that can bring them the most happiness.

The first two questions Gaye asks are physical things one can do with their “dream”, you can both see and feel them. While the third is more a mental question. Your world stands still when you’ve found your biggest desire, time will pass slow and you’ll cherish all the moments you’ll have with your one true love.

Blue of course refers to the old expression where one feels “blue”, sad, unhappy, letdown, etcetera. But as Gaye sang, this won’t occur to him, he’s happy and will die happy because he’s had true love.

Writer/producer Ed Townsend who worked on the Let’s Get It On album with Marvin Gaye revealed in an interview that Gaye first turned this track down, as he appeared to not sing songs that have a personal affection with him. And apparently this song didn’t.

Townsend wrote the song after an encounter with a woman who convinced Townsend that they could not “build happiness on the misery of others”, as they both were in relationships with other people. He told her she was right, and as he wanted to leave she asked if that was all she had to say. To which he responded, “No…if I should die tonight, Lord, before my time, I won’t die blue ‘cause I’ve know you”.

Gaye later told Townsend to “get that song out. [Because] I can sing that sonovabitch now!”. This was because at the time the two were recording Let’s Get It On, Gaye met his second wife, Janis Hunter, and felt that way about her.

Just like M1 did when comparing Jesus and cocaine, stic.man tackles cocaine usage by saying he doesn’t “do” the thing that is used as a synonym for cocaine. Last time Jesus, and now it is dextrose or glucose, or in other words sugar. Sugar is compared to cocaine because they’re both white powder/grains, and stic.man can’t digest the “sugar” because he’s lactose intolerant.

“Michael Jack, off the wall” continues the falling down theme and refers to the Michael Jackson song “Off the Wall”. The song is about relieving stress and getting over troubles, which is exactly what lean is all about.

Ebony and Ivory” refers to the Stevie Wonder & Paul McCartney song of the same name. The lyrics tackle racism as the artists sing about black and white people living in harmony.

Once again, black and white people are used as people and drugs, only M1 claims that people and drugs - and not black people and white people - shouldn’t live in harmony.
