DOOM ends his verse taking inspiration from Marvel magnate Stan Lee, creator of Spider-Man, Iron Man, and more. Beginning in the 1960’s, once Lee got his first monthly column (“Stan’s Soapbox”), he would almost religiously end his writing with the catchphrase “Excelsior!”.

The motto has since taken on a life of its own. It has featured in numerous of his comic books, voice overs, and cameos. A contemporary example is Lee’s appearance in the 2015 movie Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Stan Lee on his usage of the phrase:

I used to have a lot of expressions that I would end my comic book columns with: Hang Loose, Face Front, ‘Nuff Said, and I found that the competition was always imitating them and using them. So, I said I’m going to get one expression that they’re not going to know what it means, and they won’t know how to spell it. And that’s where excelsior came from, and they never did take up on it, thank goodness.

“Caipirinha” is Mike Patton’s ode to the summer. The lyrics are quite straightforward, painting a clear contrast between an exotic vacation and the sad, cold winter in which he presently finds himself stuck. The song explicitly states how Mike finds the winters to last too long, and instead wishes to be “there”: a sunny, faraway location where he can enjoy his caipirinha.

will.i.am slightly edits and pays homage to two hip-hop classics. Jazz rap group Jungle Brothers originally performed most of these lyrics on their single “Because I Got It Like That”. A year after the group reiterated their lyrics and flow on the “Native Tongue Decision” mix of De La Soul’s “Buddy”.

will’s “my native trunk got love galore” suggests the latter of the songs is interpolated. “Buddy” features the lyric “Native Tongues got rhymes galore”, while the original sports “Afrika got rhymes galore”. Additionally, “Buddy” does not contain any version of the line “My baby, baby, baby, you’re sexy, drive me crazy”, while “Because I Got It Like That” does with “Baby, baby, baby, I know I drive you crazy”.
