When interviewed by Spotify, Michael Franti explained that “Earth From Outer Space”

[is] about viewing Earth as if you’re in a spaceship looking back. One time I saw this interview with a pilot, he said that he was from Russia, and he said that as he was entering into orbit for the first time his spacecraft turned around he saw Earth for the first time as one continues orb, and he said it changed his whole life.

He could see, well, first of all, the oceans and the cloud forms and the landmasses, and then as they were landing, coming back, he could see where Earth was burned out, where there was deforestation, where there were scars on the planet.

He said that there’s one reason why we should all protect the Earth. And I was waiting for this reason and he said “because Earth is beautiful”. So this song is my interpretation as if I was viewing Earth from outer space.

On the All People commentary, Michael Franti told Spotify that “I’m Alive”’s chorus:

…is what I thought of as the sound that life makes, when you’re living in that moment of appreciation for all you have, even the difficult times. This song is about that sound of life

Earlier in the verse, Ras Kass predicted a planet-wide depopulation in 2000. Now, he asks you to set your watch because afterwards, the Maitreya Buddha will ascend to Earth.

In Buddhist eschatology (“end of the world-philosophy”), Maitreya is the successor to the Gautama Buddha, and is set to arrive when terrestrial life has forgotten the Dharma (Buddha’s lessons). Maitreya’s purpose is to once again teach the pure Dharma.

In actuality, Maitreya’s ascension is prophesied to occur around 4500 – about 5000 years after the passing of the Gautama Buddha. (“…when the Dispensation of the Perfect Buddha is 5000 years old…”, Angata-vamsa)

For “Suede”, Knxwledge heavily sampled “The Bottle” by jazz poet and spoken word artist Gil Scott-Heron. “The Bottle” follows Scott-Heron’s view of liquor as a coping mechanism, but also makes sure to note its self-destructing effect.

When interviewed by BBC News, Scott-Heron spoke about the song’s backstory, stating:

I watched these people lining up every morning, bringing back their empties for a discount. I discovered one of them was an ex-physician, who’d been busted for abortions on young girls.
“There was an air traffic controller in the military – one day he sent two jets crashing into a mountain. He left work that day and never went back.
