This beat would be the classic “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)”, which is arguably Pete Rock’s best-known song. “T.R.O.Y.” mainly sampled “Today” by Tom Scott and The California Dreamers.

In more recent news, Pete Rock had a few things to say about producers Simonsayz and B-Sides sampling “Today” in a strikingly similar manner; resulting in Lupe Fiasco’s “Around My Way”.

Carmel City is a (presumably) fictional place Pete Rock and CL Smooth created in the song of the same name, off the classic The Main Ingredient.

The name of the city obviously is a misspelled version of Caramel City, which is believed to be a play on Chocolate City, a name used for Washington, D.C., as its population is for a big part colored.

On the song itself CL Smooth talks about having sexual relationships with females, which is also connected to the song’s title as caramel is known for being a smooth, darker liquid.
