The song is introduced as the song “Oakland” by the popular singer Lloyd as Gambino himself is driving towards the city of Oakland. Throughout the verse, you can hear Gambino chime in and various other noises in the background as if he’s listening to the song while he’s on his way there.

It’s almost as if he notices that this song closely resembles his situation and then chimes in during the heavy drop of the hook. You can actually see this is the case in the beginning of the video for this song.

For those hoping for “Oakland” to be an official song, Lloyd has hinted that it will appear on his future mixtape!

Although no one wants to be alone, the feeling we have when we are alone as well as the fact of being alone is something we all experience which actually makes us human.

This is also a reference to a song off of his EP from 2011, “Be Alone”, in which he dealt with similar fears but no overcame them. Maybe Gambino has found out how to be happier alone.

He might be saying: “To be alone is a lie.” Often when we’re alone, we’re on the internet, connected to everyone and never really alone. Because the internet, no one is alone until we die.

Additionally, feeling alone is a shared human experience. We’re never alone in feeling alone; thus we’re never truly alone. Albums like Because the Internet can make people feel less alone, as it can make you realize other people are going through the same thing you are.

Since the Internet is a never-ending permanent archive, everything put on it will be here forever. This includes the mistakes people make. However, Donald seems to care less about that as long as he isn’t suffering by himself. This calls all the way back to “I. Flight of the Navigator” where he pleads with a supposed lover to not be alone.

Notably, this may seem to contradict the closing line of a verse in “II. Earth: The Oldest Computer”:

To be alone is alive

While the purpose of life can only be defined by one’s subjective, solo experience, the mistakes made during that experience won’t amount to much as long as a person has someone to make them with—in Donald’s opinion anyway.

This actually goes back to the fear that Donald has of growing up (and subsequently, the future); he wants to be young forever and that’s a sentiment he frequently references in his songs.

This ties in with both the screenplay and the ending of “That Power” from his debut album, Camp. In “That Power,” he mentions how to “never got off the bus,” signifying that he never grew up. He lived his life as The Boy because of this, reacting immaturely and childish to things throughout the whole screenplay until near the end where he finally falls in love and tries to get his life together. It wasn’t his choice, but everything he went through in the play pretty much forced him to grow up and face reality.

Possible reference to the Because The Internet screenplay. It starts off with:

The main character (The Boy), eating on a pop tart whilst commenting “fuck you niggers” on hotnewhiphop just to get funny replies.

His job in the script is trolling, entertainers, politicians, musicians, athletes etc
which can be seen here.

But by the end all his family has passed away, and he is left to provide for himself and his girl through drug dealing, hence having to “grow up”

Both Naomi and The Boy share an intense feeling of loneliness. This is one of the main aspects of Donald’s life that he expresses in Clapping For The Wrong Reasons and the album’s screenplay. Though he’s living in a lavish California mansion with his closest friends, Donald feels isolated.

Bino had a “ménage” (short for “ménage à trois”) and another word for threesome. Apparently, he went hard in that thang!

This isn’t the first time Gambino’s got some in a garage.

Drake had similar experiences:

He’s also referencing the vase his character broke in the screen play that accompanied the album.
