The song was written after the Tienanmen Square protest, but, in general, it talks about how governments and TV manipulate people, essentially placating them and keeping them focused on propaganda so they can maintain control over the people over whom they rule.

“Slide” is the second track on the Goo Goo Dolls‘ sixth album Dizzy Up the Girl. It is one of their most popular songs and arguably the most misinterpreted.

Based on the melody and guitar riff, most people perceive this as a happy song. However, according to lead singer and guitarist Johnny Rzeznik, “Slide” is about a couple questioning how their relationship should progress. The girl is pregnant, and they’re trying to decide whether they should get an abortion, get married, or if they should just end it.
