Basketball players who come from the Euro league are notably known for how well they shoot… particularly from 3-point range. Peja Stojaković and Vladimir Radmanović represent this case.

FUN FACT: “-ovic” means “son of” in Russian. So “Gunovic” would literally mean “son of a gun”.

“When Doves Cry” is a Prince song that was inspired by his relationship with Vanity 6 member Susan Moonsie.

It is also a song Prince composed specifically for the soundtrack of his semi-autobiographical film Purple Rain. He was asked by director Albert Magnoli to write a song to match the theme of a particular segment of the film – one which involved intermingled parental difficulties and a love affair. The next morning, Prince had reportedly composed two songs, one of which was “When Doves Cry”.

“When Doves Cry” is a rare song that does not feature bass guitar. It creates a tension and sense of “something missing” that fits with the lyrical theme.

Double entendre:
This is a reference to the Dark Alliance series, which introduces the idea of the CIA helping distribute cocaine and crack in America.
Not only that, he is saying that black people are given these bad materials in hopes for the future that we may destroy ourselves: drugs to keep our mind and body from being healthy, and guns so we can kill each other.

Speaking of guns, the second meaning of “crack” in this line refers to the sound of a gun after one pulls the trigger. This could imply that the police discriminate and attempt to impede black people from living fairly in a safe society by shooting them down. (See the Civil Rights Movement as a primary example.)

His daughter made something; in the video, it was a cut-out symmetrical drawing of girls holding hands. All she wanted was a few minutes of his attention/bonding.

However, Em “had to work”, and just like several dads do throughout their children’s childhood, he didn’t even acknowledge the importance of the drawing or her effort of making it.

The plane also foreshadows the ending of the song. The plane is a symbol for Em’s career and is referenced later when it crashes.

At the time (in 2001), when the album came out), there were about 8 million people living in New York City (what he refers to when he says, “big city”).

Of course, everyone has their own story. Referring to himself when he says, “young brother”, his story is just one of very many.

This could also very well be a reference to A Tribe Called Quest’s song 8 Million Stories on their classic album, Midnight Marauders.

Possibly a reference to the song 8 Million Stories.

He could not live with himself knowing what he did to his own mother. He jumped to his death because he couldn’t fathom what he had become.

It’s as if his soul was taken out and he couldn’t get it back. He couldn’t identify himself as the William Jacobs he thought of himself as: he became an advocate of the devil.

It was the only option in his eyes because he knew he should be in Hell (with the devil) for committing such a terrible crime.
