During the late 60s the NFL merged with the AFL, leading to a 26 teams league with 13 teams in each conference. This meant that the season had a 13 game format, not a 16 games one like today.

If you add the 1976 missed because of an injury and the lower numbers in his late part of the career you can see why the number is way smaller than his children’s.

In the 10 seasons Archie played at New Orleans, the Saints had nine losing seasons, and only managed to get to .500 once, mostly because of the lack of offensive options and a good offensive line.

Sports Illustrated’s Paul Zimmerman, wrote that opposing defensive linemen, “Jack Youngblood in particular,” were known to take it easy on the poorly protected Manning and not hit him as hard. In 1976 Manning had to miss a whole season due to an injury.

Archie Manning was born in Drew, Mississippi, the son of Jane Elizabeth (née Nelson) and Elisha Archie Manning, Jr.

Even though he’ll go down as a pro football player, he was also drafted in the Major League Baseball four times, first in 1967 by the Braves and later twice by the White Sox then by the Royals in 1971.

He also starred in the (in)famous rap commercial with Eli and Peyton.

Archie Manning was the first College QB to ever appear on National TV in 1969 in the game against Alabama. Ole Miss lost 33-32, but Manning’s performance was outstanding: he threw for 436 yards and three touchdowns, also rushing for 104 yards.
That 540-yard performance was only beaten on September 29, 2012 when Johnny “Football” Manziel from Texas A&M accumulated 553 yards against Arkansas.

Inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989. Manning’s legacy is honored to this day on the campus of Ole Miss where the speed limit is eighteen miles per hour in honor of Manning’s jersey number, which was retired by the Rebels.
