Three of Sauron’s Rings of Power were held by the elves. These had been fashioned by Celebrimbor without Sauron’s knowledge; thus, alone among the Rings, they were not under his control. But their fate was still bound up with that of the One; therefore after the War of the Ring, they lost much of their power, and those who had borne them departed for Valinor.

Narya, set with a red stone, was called the Ring of Fire; Gil-Galad was its first owner. Círdan the Shipwright, his lieutenant, obtained it after his death. By the time of “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit,” he had given it to Gandalf. Nenya, made of mithril and set with a diamond (“adamant”), was the Ring of Water held by Galadriel. Vilya, the Ring of Air, was set with a sapphire; with Narya, it was given to Gil-Galad and passed to Círdan, who gave it immediately to Elrond of Rivendell.

“Under the sky” contrasts with the stone halls of the dwarves in the following line, and may suggest the glory and nobility of the elven race in the world of Middle-earth. Elves are naturally immortal, for example, where dwarves and men are not (though dwarves may live for centuries). Tolkien explained of the original elven race in The Book of Lost Tales: “[Elves] are made by man in his own image and likeness; but freed from those limitations which he feels most to press upon him. They are immortal, and their will is directly effective for the achievement of imagination and desire.”

Another example of the association of elves with sky imagery occurs in the name Elrond, Lord of Rivendell and ruler of the elves in The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien gave the name as meaning, variously, “Vault of Stars,” “Star-dome,” or “Elf of the Cave.”
