It would be foolish of Hov to want to go back to a life where carrying a firearm was a necessity. He escaped his past life and doesn’t wish to return to it. In “December 4th” he explained why he preferred the rap life to the criminal one:

And niggas get tied up for product
And little brothers' ring fingers get cut up
To show mothers they really got em
And this was the stress I lived with till I decided
To try this rap shit for a living

Jay cares a lot about his mom, if you think about hurting her or making her suffer don’t do that, you’re making him nervous:

You could try me fucka but when I squeeze it hurts, fine
We’ll lose two lives, yours and mines
Gimme any amount of time don’t let Ms. Carter grieve
At the funeral parlor drippin' tears on my sleeve

Similar sentiments were expressed in Who Gon Stop Me with the lyric “middle finger to my old life”

There’s a bunch of Colombians coming in Friday, new guys.

A plug is a contact from another country who ships drugs in bulk for you to deal in the US. Jay is quoting straight from the movie Scarface here to express how impressed he is with the success of the illegal immigrants who are making big money outside of the framework of the “legal” job market – thus they have the money to purchase luxury automobiles, but lack the basic health/pension benefits.

Jay is associating himself with these immigrants since every African-American is, in a deep sense, an immigrant of a painful and involuntary kind.

As Kanye once tweeted, “We looking crazy fresh where paparazzi when you need em”. Hov looks so fly that he is willing to put up with the inconvenience the paparazzi bring just so that he can show off.

Hublots watches start around $7K and go up to 1$ million! This was the first time Jay mentioned this brand, which eventually lead to a partnership between the two in 2013. The French brand is way more expensive than Rolex, which are in the 60-70k$ range, that’s probably why Jay prefers it!

He’s gonna drive slow through the city (probably with Bey) while leaning back in his ride. (probably a Maybach) – after all, with so many watches he has time in his hands.

This is the first of various The Black Album references in Watch The Throne, which are used to remember where the Throne started. Jay Z spit a similar line on “Encore” which was produced by Kanye, who also used this phrase before on “We Major”.

This time though the reference is to Otis Redding, which is one of the leading artists in soul music history, as well as the meme Eddie Murphy character in Coming to America, Mr. Randy Watson.

Kanye’s last solo album was 2010 while Jay Z’s was in 2009, kinda of a big hiatus for two artists who used to put out new music every year.

“Swagger” had been used as a noun to mean “braggadocio” for many, many years, but Jay Z was the first known rapper to use the term on wax, back in 2001 on “All I Need”. On Hov’s 2003 release The Black Album he used the shortened term ‘swag’ on both Public Service Announcement (“Check out my swag' yo, I walk like a ballplayer”) and December 4 (“My self-esteem went through the roof, man. I got my swag”). Now it is one of the most popular terms used in the rap game today to express the way someone presents themselves.

Jay has been living the high life since the beginning of his career, drinking champagne and driving a white Lexus before he had a deal, as he told his audience on “Imaginary Player” in 1997:

I was popping that Cristal
When all y'all niggas thought it was beer and shit, you know
Wearing that platinum shit
When all y'all chicks thought it was silver and shit
I got to be the pioneer of this shit

He already told us in 2001 that he guessed he got his swagger back, but I bet that Shakespeare and Poetry Genius would like a word, since the English poet has been using it since 1590!

The first two persons Jay meats in heaven are Biggie and Pac, two of the greatest rappers to ever touch a mic. He’d tell his Brooklyn friend that even though he’s dead, his music is still alive.

In 1996 there was tension between 2Pac and Jay for various reasons, especially his affiliation with Biggie. In 2006 in an XXL interview Hova shed some light on the matter:

I reference Jordan because he had similar stories. He said that he felt cheated when he got to the league and Larry Bird and Magic were leaving. I feel like that. I be like, Damn, I wonder what it would be like with Big and Pac and everybody here. The worst I’ve heard was that I wouldn’t be who I am if Big and Pac was here. That’s God given talent. You cant

And that would have been interesting too, how that would’ve played out with me and Pac. Because I wasn’t where I am now. It would’ve went down, it was a collision course, 100%. I knew some people out West and they told me about the [Makaveli] song. It hadn’t dropped yet, but was on the way. I had my record ready. I shelved it out of the utmost respect, but it was coming.

I performed it one time only at Apollo over No Diggity. No one has that tape. They usually tape the Apollo shows, but they had just stopped taping for some reason. We tried to find the tape. Its 2,000 people that know about it. I did two verses. Its the truth, that’s the best shit. Its so liberating, when you say what the fuck you wanna say .

It’s hard to find someone that shares your interest and your mentality; it’s even harder finding someone that’s on your same level money and fame-wise. Jay and B were lucky to find each other and understand that it’s a very rare occasion.

Seldom is a rare word which echoes one of Jay’s most personal tracks, “December 4th”:

And “trust” is a word you seldom hear from us
Hustlers, we don’t sleep, we rest one eye up

If this line links back to that one, it means that now Jay finally has someone he can trust.

Even though he moved to a fancy area, Jay will never forget where he’s from.

Also, no matter how big and rich he becomes and how much he interacts with DeNiro or his neighbors, he’ll still be considered “hood” by that crowd; he’ll never quite fit in.
