Jib performs for the woman, pretending to be happy, and continues the performance because it is easier than dealing with her emotional turmoil. She see the fact of leaving as a relief or as the end of that uncomfortable conversation.
Additionally, by this point she has made the decision to abort the child. If she emotionally reverts to her previous distress, then she will undoubtedly lose her conviction. Her falsely happy attitude is a method of self-preservation.
Jig certainly seems to be happy about the waitress' comment for the sake of escaping the conversation but I doubt that she decides to keep the child here. There’s too much effort being put into displaying her frustration and sense of general dismay at their situation for her to decide to keep the child here.
She simply wants the conversation to stop because she is sick of the idea and wants their problem to pass quickly in hopes of avoiding her feelings about the situation.
Hemingway chooses his words carefully in this section. It is the first time he shows the girl smiling, and she smiles brightly, to thank the woman. Hemingway is showing that the smile is genuine and symbolizes happiness and thanks. The American then moves the two bags to the fertile, green side of the station in a symbolic gesture that shows he has decided to support the pregnancy, and the girl smiles at him, to thank him.
This section of the story could be interpreted this way:
Jig smiles brightly at the woman because she was a messenger of light in the middle of darkness. The woman is offering an escape and therefore, an end to the arguments the man is providing towards an abortion, which is what Jig has indicated her opposition towards.
After that point, the man gives up and submits to the woman’s decision, and prepares for a new life.
