All 1.4 million active duty military members are still on duty, but half of the 800,000 civilian Defense Department employees are on furlough. These cuts are major, but nowhere near as severe as the cuts to non-defense agencies like Housing & Urban Development or the EPA, both of which were gutted to the bone.

President Obama addressed the military on the eve of the shutdown to assure them military operations will continue as usual. Not mentioned was the fact that military members will not get paid until Congress passes an appropriations bill, at which point they get paid retroactively.
