Fans were met with police resistance as they rushed the stage during the performance of “I Can’t Stand Myself (When You Touch Me)”. Considering Martin Luther King Jr. had been assassinated the day prior, the situation could have turned violent. James Brown, however, paused the show and dismissed the police while also admonishing and consoling the mourning black community similarly to how Kendrick does here.
