If Kendrick is the King of NY, Rapsody claims to be the queen. The “Outta Control” refers to Big Sean’s track, where Kendrick first made the claim to be king. She finishes her verse with “it’s rap,” justifying her boasts with the fact that rap music is supposed to be competitive and braggadocios.

Here’s a link to Rapsody’s verified annotation about the conversation she had with King Kendrick on “My Song.”

He is criticizing the rappers who aren’t artistic and only are puppets of the record label. Hence, giving them a pat on the back and a ‘way to go’. Things parents would say as positive re-enforcement to encourage an action their kid did.

‘And a way to go from your label’ is a play on words: the rapper is told ‘way to go!’ like a friendly encouragement and is given a ‘way to go’ as in a path or a route he is forced to follow. This just backs up his point about other rappers who are ‘puppets’ because they aren’t choosing their way and are given patronizing encouragements.

Following his shout out to Busta Rhymes, Em lists some of his other major inspirations.

  • Rakim – The rapper who brought rap a quantum leap forward in terms of rhyme schemes and syllables.

  • Lakim Shabazz – most likely inspired the militant aspect of Eminem’s lyrics, such as songs like “Mosh”. His complicated (for the era) internal rhymes and phrasing were likely an equally big influence.

  • 2Pac – Probably inspired Em in his boldness and image. Eminem followed suit in his rebellious attitude towards the industry.

  • NWAEazy E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, MC Ren and DJ Yella are all members of the pioneering gangsta rap group N.W.A. They are obvious inspirations of his, especially because he later linked up with Dr. Dre.

Staring in the eyes of this young kid from Chiraq, Lu realizes that he once was in this kid’s exact place many years ago. It’s a reminder of the OGs that tried to speak to him as a kid, and helps him realize that the world often moves in cycles.

Similar to when a parent gives a child advice that they know will work, the child is usually hesitant. When the child grows up, however, they realize that there was truth to what their parent said and wish that they listened.

That passed-down wisdom took a lifetime to build and in that one moment of regret the child stands where their parents and significant others probably once stood – they now understand and carry on the advice from those before them.

This is a story about him dealing crack to a crack addict also known as a fiend. He is completely desensitized. He’s got a mean mug on, and he’s nervous as a surgeon. Surgeons are known to be steady and un-nerved in pressure situations. He can’t believe how routine he is about this deal, because his life path was supposed to make him a rapper chronicling his hood, not someone so involved in it.

A hipster may enjoy Danny Brown’s new music, like XXX because of its very alternative and experimental instrumentals. But for this album its the return of that old Danny Brown–at least for the first side of this album.

Also, Danny Brown and Freddie Gibbs are two rappers that have played a ton of indie festivals. As a result, they’ve been type casted as “hipster rappers.” In reality, both of them are from the hood and usually rap about their environment.
