Gentrification, a problem that is really becoming imminent in Watsky’s hometown San Francisco (& the Bay in general), is a very hipster heavy issue. Such neighborhoods as the “Valencia District” which used to be authentic hispanic neighborhoods, are being overrun with hipster cafes and thrift shops.
Eating hot chips, like Takis, would literally and figuratively leave him “red handed”: caught in the act of perpetuating gentrification as well as having the food on his fingers.
Watsky is no stranger to hot chip dust—on the Guilty Pleasures version of his debut album, you can see red dust on his fingers.
He realizes he’s evolved into the hipsters he loathes. He’s asking to be put down like the bandit he is.
Watsky has also been caught red handed with the land specifically. Asking the listener to “make him a dead bandit” for stealing land also calls to mind the expansion of the Wild West, during which predominantly white settlers stole land from the native Americans (and many bandits were killed). Gentrification is just a modern day equivalent to manifest destiny.
