Jay explores some imagery lexical to the color black, a frequent and significant motif in the first half of his career, hence the title of his eighth LP The Black Album. He revisits his mafioso aesthetic from the mid-1990s Reasonable Doubt era, accompanied with a warning shot towards opposition — possibly towards Drake, as suggested earlier.
Jay further develops the trope with the image of him going on trial whilst wearing black underwear. In New York correctional facilities, such colored clothing is not permitted. Hailing from Marcy, this action suggests that Jay is confident of this hypothetical case’s outcome (especially with his black leather boxing shorts).
Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone that causes sleep, released by exposure to darkness. By “black out” he could be referring to this effect due to his aforementioned demonstrated blackness.
On the other hand, Jay could be confused with melanin, better known as the pigment for skin (Eminem made a similar mistake on an unreleased track). If so, this refers back to the line “nigga watch your tone”, giving it a more literal meaning of him being blacker (better) than his unnamed rival.
