Most of the time, this goes without saying. We’ll say it anyway:

FILE/DO YOUR FEDERAL TAXES BEFORE STATE AND LOCAL TAXES!

The numbers are taken line for line from your federal return. Do this before hand and you will save time. Do it after and end up doing your federal taxes midway through your state taxes.

The dreaded question: what is a dependent, and am I one? Chances are, if you’re filling out this form alone, you aren’t. A dependent can either be a child or relative, meeting extremely strict and easy guidelines. People love to cheat on this part, but the IRS loves to catch them.

For someone to claim you, you must live at home for more than half of the year and be under 19 (unless you are a full time student, in which case you can be 24), and rely on your parent for more than half of your support**. If you are physically or mentally disabled, you are also a dependent.

Sometimes, it can even be a relative! If you are supported by said taxpayer and make less than $3,900, they can (and will) claim you!

Moral of the story:

#IF YOU ARE A DEPENDENT, KNOW ABOUT IT AND FILL OUT THE WORKSHEET! FILL THIS OUT EVEN IF NOBODY CLAIMS YOU – IT STILL COUNTS!

This is very easy to know. First, see if you filed a 1040 or not. If you filed a 1040A or 1040EZ, you did not itemize!

In other terms, you’re now about 23 – past the age when your parents can legally support you. You’re on your own now tiger (unless there are circumstances putting you under care, such as medical issues – research these).

This line has so far been frequently misunderstood: Tutu is an Archbishop and fervent supporter of Christianity and God. He is not questioning his faith in God.

Instead, Tutu finds God to be wholly accepting, despite your attraction. He will continue to worship the God he sees, a fair one, and ignore the one that others force, the homophobic one. The largest part of the fallacy is failing to recognize that Spotify generally works as one part of an artist’s exposure. Alongside Spotify is iTunes, Youtube, traditional sales, and countless other streaming and playing services.

Think Twitter: nobody puts their entire social stock in Twitter. There is Myspace, Facebook, Pinterest, and countless others, all part of the same idea.

Which raises the interesting question of how Spotify actually profits. Spotify is mostly used by free users, but offers two levels of paid accounts. Spotify notes that:

“Ratio of paying subscribers to active free users: Over 20%”

Using these numbers, Spotify (taking the $4.99 per month/$60 per year plan as a minimum) makes some $18,000,000 per year off of accounts. The real value is higher.

Yorke now infamously decided to remove his solo album, as well as the Atoms For Peace debut, from Spotify, citing the seemingly pitiful .03 cents pay per play. Yorke at first gained praise for “sticking it to the man,” but it soon became clear that the issue was squarely the fault of labels, not Spotify – the low payment is industry-wide and the actual ratio is set in label contracts. Yorke attacked the wrong beast.
