Specifically, the relevant Fifth Amendment section states that no citizen shall

“be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law”

Because the court decided that marriage equality is a facet of “liberty,” however out of the scope of its powers, the fundamental underpinning for DOMA is thus unconstitutional.
