The mark of a good leader is detachment from ego for the sake of the common good, rather than staking the success of your own cause to a faction or event. While President Rousseff’s statement until this point addresses the issues at hand candidly, this represents a rhetorical turning point. No longer are the protesters the voice; only “[her] government” is capable of making change. This rhetorical tool highlights that profound change is unlikely to come from the top.
