The Xbox One requires an “on once per 24 hours” Internet connection, always-on video and audio equipment, and a controlled market for used games, hamstringing friend-to-friend sharing and reselling. Likewise, its presentations focused on the video capabilities, matched with the now infamous discovery that, if the console is not connected once per 24 hours to the Internet, it will not play a game, left the gaming community in opposition.

This replaces wide-ranging, unchecked powers with a return to the normal operation of the balance of power within the US government. Normally, the Executive Branch would be required to seek Congressional authorization for extend acts of war or to violate international borders. This keeps the branch in check while vetting any large decision made by the Executive Branch. Currently, this system has broken down, due to the Authorization for Use of Military Force, which circumvents the checks and balance system.

The Authorization for Use of Military Force, signed three days after the events of 9/11, authorized the President to use all necessary force against any involved in the terror acts. The law was later used to justify and engage in the war in Afghanistan, the ongoing drone killings, and several other extra-legal foreign responses. Likened to emergency powers by critics, the terms of the law have given the Executive Branch unprecedented authority and reach, across international border.
