Falling into exactly what he hoped to avoid in the intro, Daniel finds himself depressed and down at love lost. The “sad blues” of loneliness and trouble leave him singing about pain, instead of the usual wonder and joy he finds in life. The transition to blues guitar matches the sudden shift and longing he feels.

Known for his dejected, heartfelt songs on love, George Jones is a model for the classic heartbroken cowboy. While Daniel falls in love, he does not want to end up like Jones. Choosing to be bold and strong before even finding a woman, he never wants to see himself become the same kind of heartbroken man. Sadly, this later came to be a fixture of Daniel’s music, in reference to his lost love, Laurie.

Everyone has the same life, with the same options and same issues. Nothing makes anyone inherently special. So the motto “so fucking what” is perfect – complaining, being proud, or even asking what do to is just ignoring reality.

During Stalin’s rule of the Soviet Union (a hot topic for GWAR), a policy of collectivization was implemented. Rather than having several different small farms, the USSR organized all of its peasants and farmers into giant “collective” farms, then harshly ruled over them. The result was increased grain production, but famine, feuds, and a massive period of death (called the Holodomor). For the ideal communist, collective farms were a dream realized.

A nice play on Bill Clinton, President of the United States during the post-Gulf War period. Clinton was famous for, among other things, his saxophone playing. While Clinton did not authorize the Gulf War, he continued airstrikes and the no-fly zone started in the late 1980s.

You can…use your imagination here. Let’s just say that Billy’s “manually” making love to a dream…

Before singing this song at a concert in Seattle in the late 1980s, Bragg said that he included the reference to “wanking” (as he put it) so that pop groups would be reluctant to record covers of the song.

A similar euphemism is used in Weezer’s song The World Has Turned And Left Me Here:

I just made love with your sweet memory
One thousand times in my head

Hyping the war before, during, and after the conflict, the Sun notably turned the skirmish into an issue of British sovereignty, following the same yellow journalism fear-mongering as US Spanish-American War tabloids. It is likely that, had the Sun not so deeply mixed the conflict with patriotic ideals, the war would have been less severe or perhaps never fought.

Choosing to avoid the devilish reporters, Billy would rather fight than talk. While the fighting meshes with the environment, all part of war, the reporters make it hit home in a way that he cannot fathom.

“Way down South” are the Falkland Islands, the center of the 1982 war between Argentina and Britain over the sovereignty of the island chain. Despite mounting on-island pressure to let the population choose its own course, the Argentinian government decided to use force to retake the land, masking at-home economic and civil rights issues. While they did not expect a UK military response, they wound up facing a two-week onslaught of British Special Forces and marine teams. Eventually, after a brief two-month battle, the conflict ended in British victory, but with 255 killed.

When you witness so much destruction, the smooth, beautiful Salisbury Plain, much like anything else pleasant, becomes just another place to remember what has happened.

Building up a dream image of a girl who wanted him and would give herself to him some fall day, Billy deludes himself into not realizing that what he had was a best friend. While the relationship was never to be physical, his desires overpowered the qualities that attracted the girl to him in the first place, traded for lust and wanting. Lying to himself about the outcome, Billy missed it all.
