Gambino is often criticized for his rapping ability. He get’s a lot of shit from haters claiming he’s not real. Here’s his response to that, saying yeah, you can call him the worst rapper ever, but how does the worst rapper ever do all this amazing stuff?

The first line also refers to the fact that Donald blew up on TV through his comedy. He doesn’t just spit on rap songs, he also spits on open mics, as in open mic stand up comedy.

This also refers to the rating his debut album received on the influential media outlet Pitchfork Media – a 1.6 out of 10 – and possibly the worst review any rapper had received to date. He has previously rapped about this on http://rapgenius.com/736303

This is the second song released promoting Childish’s sophomore album, Because The Internet. The name of the song is named after the famous black actor/writer/producer Yaphet Frederick Kotto.

Its interesting to note that one of the two books that Yaphet Kotto has written is named Royalty. This relates to Gambino’s crew/family as well as his mixtape R O Y A L T Y released in 2012.

The end of the promo video is intercut with two messages. First, “because the internet…” and then “winter break”. The YouTube video itself says “available this winter break.”

Russian roulette is a dangerous game in which bullets are inserted into a revolver, with omitted bullets in sections of the moon clip. You then cock the hammer, place the barrel against your head, and pull the trigger. It’s a gamble whether or not you’ll die, and just like love, it’s a gamble, but not with this girl, because safety is on. That is, there is a certainty that no one will get hurt.

The whole point of Russian Roulette is the element of danger. If you’re passing around a gun with a safety, then you’re just going through the motions, much like Gambino is doing with his girl.

But even though he’s playing it safe, it might not matter because his apathy is killin him as he’s face down in the grass and dead to the world. In order for CG to play the game of love (Russian roulette) with this girl he would have to take off the safety. This goes along with the theme of regret in this song/verse. Perhaps, looking back, he wished he played the game, instead of leaving the safety on.

The best date. Ice cream and weed.

This line refers to the association of chocolate with love. Alternatively, “hot” chocolate or fudge could melt, like someone’s “heart melts” when they’re into someone a lot.

When people are high, they can feel euphoric and positively toward everyone. Both of these are like simulators of love, so it’s not legitimate love, but it’s pretty close.

This gem was hard to find. Back in 2011, Gambino hosted the MTVu Woodie Awards (An awards show geared towards college students) and decided it was only fair to spit a freestyle. Although this was clearly a sketch as part of programming, it sure beats the regular award show banter.

Gambino grew up in a Jehovah’s Witness household, but once he left and started living on his own, he’s denounced his religious upbringing. It’s a dilemma he now faces. It’s possible that Gambino is now more of an agnostic, or even an atheist, as he has stated in “Won’t Stop”:

Airport atheist, only pray when there’s turbulence

A rotten tooth…or maybe a golden one? Later in the film Donald pulls a tooth from his nose, relating to the “smelly” mic:

This can also mean “keep spittin on the mic”. Many rappers spit while performing, making the mic smell like their teeth.

Gambino loves his Pax. It probably gets him through an average stressful day like this. He even mentions it the “Feel The Love Remix” he was on.
