Produced by none other than the ringleader of the Wu-Tang Clan, RZA, this song gives us a deep look and a walk through the lives of young men, struggling to get by day to day and hunting for riches in the concrete jungle of New York.
This light yet deceptively deep beat samples a beautifully playful piano segment from “As Long As I’ve Got You” by The Charmels.
The sample appears throughout the entire song. RZA tunes it up from F to F#.
The beat contains two distinct parts to it, with the introduction, being a heavily drum-oriented loop, sampling voices from the song mentioned above. This provides a smooth transition into the second loop, which is the backdrop for the rest of the song.
In the transition, RZA samples the beautiful piano melody, which is repeated throughout the entire song. You hear a faint bass, which compliments the aesthetic of being a light song, whereas the heavy drums provide contrast, creating an atmospheric heaviness to the entire song.
This beat breakdown is definitely worth watching.
It is just tuned up half a semitone, not a whole one.
