He pioneered Pan-Africanism, and influenced a number of black civil rights leaders, including Malcolm X and Dr. King. In October 1961, he and his wife moved to Ghana, newly independent, at the behest of its prime minister, Kwame Nkrumah, to work on the Encyclopedia Africana, his life’s work. He died August 17, 1963.
