Thanks to his prowess as a rapper, Cole went from working a minimum wage job for a $400 a week to a bankable hip-hop star securing $100,000 a venue and a whopping $400,000 a week.

Note, too, the use of parallelism here

This calls to mind a similar line from his label CEO:

Turn that 62 to 125, 125 to a 250
250 to a half a million, ain’t nothin' nobody can do with me

This should go hand-in-hand with the line next to this one, saying that although his girl will gossip and bitch, i.e. ‘running her mouth,’ she can’t eat correctly, or use her mouth in one of its two useful functions. Whether this is due to anorexia, or due to cocaine causing a loss of appetite, is not specified.

Here’s a moderately skinny model.

Cocaine killed Able (bodily function).
Cain killed Abel.

Double entendre.

  1. Cocaine damages your brain cells, essentially slowly killing/handicapping you, or limiting your abilities (Able).

  2. Cain and Abel are two sons of Adam and Eve in Genesis 4:1-2. Long story short, Cain slays Abel, God curses him.

Additionally, it is believed Caine killed Able with a rock. Rock is another name for crack cocaine

A play on the meanings of Hamlet – the most well known is William Shakespeare’s tragedy, but it can also mean a small village.

Hamlet’s a tragedy about moral corruption where practically everyone dies – protagonists and antagonists – aside from the main protagonist’s assistant.

Spending a day in this Sin City is like spending a day in a mad, tragic play.

Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.

Luke 23:34, KJV

A famous line from the Bible, it was Christ’s dying line while on the cross. Essentially he’s asking God to forgive his friends and the city of Sin.

Cyhi is Christian.

In the Christian religion, Christ had 12 disciples, the fishers of men, some of who would go on to become Saints in the Catholic religion due to their piety.

Cyhi questions that if they were really that righteous and saint-like, they wouldn’t need saving.

Jesus also spent his time with the “sinners” of his day – prostitutes, tax collectors for the Roman occupiers, etc. He often came into conflict with the “righteous” Jewish religious teachers of his day, the Pharisees, because of this. His defense? “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick” -Matt 9:12, Mark 2:17, Luke 5:31
Cyhi’s theology here is spot-on

Matthew 9:13 — “But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Mark 2:17 – “When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

These are what makes up the Sin City as they are all sinful acts. Cyhi with much of his verse is trying to allude that these things are holding you down or stopping you from reaching true potential but you don’t really mind or realize that it’s destroying you because it’s all fun (literally the definition of sin).

Not only that, but these are all severe and normally very common addictions. You can’t stop and you’re basically okay with it because that’s what sells in the city of sin. The undertone of the song is that if this is what the people are buying, then who’s selling it? (Cyhi and Travis, they’re on top watching this disgusting world unfold beneath)

Cannes is a city located in the French Riviera. It is a commune of France located in the Alpes-Maritimes department. The city is also famous for its various luxury shops, restaurants, and hotels.

So naming the girl he went with ‘Francis’ is sort of a play on words. Francis. Francois, France. Cannes is French.

Interestingly enough, Kanye was there for the Cannes Film Festival, showing off his film Cruel Summer, which apparently was so radical that it had to be filmed and viewed in a special pyramid viewing tent, with seven cameras and screens.

CyHi is from the great city of Atlanta, Georgia. Here, he plays with that name and refers it to Atlantis. After a failed attempt to invade Athens, Atlantis sank into the ocean “in a single day and night of misfortune.”

Lost in this case, a little different however. Cyhi means morally lost, as Sin City is an evil place filled with distracting and addicting activities.

Funny enough, in the Futurama episode “The Deep South” Atlanta actually does ended up becoming Atlantis
