After enough time in the field, enough immoral things either seen or done, the character finds themselves now utterly desensitized to any form of compassion and understanding, only left with the pain and anguish of previous experiences.

Whether it’s in drugs, habits, lifestyle choices or otherwise the “high” or delightful feeling gained can come from pure or impure actions. In this self-destructive context, this is a feeling that cannot be subsidized, replaced or even maintained for long but will still leave the individual yearning for more, almost in the sense of a heroine addict’s need to get that high again by any means necessary.

To understand the movie, much isn’t needed except for an open mind to philosophy.

At first it’s mainly dealing with the protagonists monotone life of working routine and apathy towards most aspects of his lifestyle until the grand intervention of someone on the other side of the tracks. They both hate the jobs they work, and continue to try finding some sense of meaning in their lives which ends up generally connecting all the participants in Fight Club, evaluated through Tyler’s speeches which could be cited with a form of nihilism and the general idea of “hitting bottom”, eliminating all fear and finding freedom in yourself.

This opens the floodgates to the very basics of anarchy, working against a system influenced by consumerism that causes people to be infatuated more with the traditional “Keeping up with the Joneses” idiom than human and community growth.

The protagonist from the beginning of the film suffers from insomnia, unable to sleep and endlessly finds himself trying to find any solution, resorting to doctor visits for medication and eventually even support group visits though there is no medical problems wrong with him. This could seemingly be pinpointed at the lack of substance within his life that is notably filled with material objects, showing his interest in owning the latest Ikea catalog but not much more until he gets to the support groups. This is where Tyler steps in, filling in the gaps of his life where he normally feels empty and subconsciously makes him strive to be the “best” person he can be, whether he wanted it or not.

Though the first known conversation with Tyler Durden appears during the protagonist’s business trip there are flashes of his figure before then, foreshadowing his entire arrival before the film even digs into it’s main plot.

#SPOILER ALERT
Initially the protagonists name isn’t known throughout three-fourths of the film, often avoiding situations where his name is forcibly used and instead replaced with the temporary solution of the medical documents written in the first person found in Tyler’s house (“I am Jack’s complete lack of surprise”) until TA-DA it turns out that the protagonist and Tyler Durden are the exact same person.

These lines are taken from The LOX song “Fuck You” including a sample of Jadakiss‘ verse at the very end.

In normal context, the line depicts a sense of untrust against most with their own devious intentions and plans to screw someone over. It becomes a metaphor for keeping your grass cut or being aware of your surroundings to spot the “snakes in the grass” – shady, conniving people that could strile at any time
