Spike Lee has money out the gate so that indeed is a SLIM chance.

This sounds a bit like a reference to Get On The Bus. It’s a movie from 1996 that Spike Lee directed about a group of men who ride a bus to attend the Million Man March.

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” is a popular idiom used in the English language, meaning that you cannot change lifelong tendencies. Obviously there is a contrast between the old dog and the new tricks – they are different, in the same way Kathy Lee was a younger woman and Regis Philbin was an older man.

Kathie Lee and Regis were a duo that did a popular morning talk show from 1988-2000. One could argue the point of the entertaining program was for the two to “tease” each other, and look for hilarity in quirks of the old dog Regis.

These lines have multiple meanings:

  • They draw parallels between the American government and the ancient national powerhouse of Babylon. Babylon was located in present-day Iraq, which connects to the occupation of Iraq by U.S. forces that began in 2003.

  • Babylon is often used as a derogatory term for a location, condemning it as corrupt. In the Book of Revelation, it’s where Antichrist rules and it is the center of evil in the world.

  • Aleister Crowley describes Babalon in The Book of the Law as the Great Mother and a goddess.

  • Soulo charges against those who “babble on,” cleverly coining the phrase from its similarity to “Babylon.” Additionally, this is a simultaneous reference to the French play Tartuffe with a similar line:

In the tower of Babylon, all these people do is babble on.

  • There is also a reference to the concept of Babylon and Zion in Rastafarianism, with Babylon being immensely evil and negative. This would also tie into the first line of the hook, which references Haile Selassie, also known as Jah Rastafari.
