Marvin is suggesting that he paid the lawyer fees for his wife (at the time), Anna Gordy Gaye during their divorce. A likely possibility considering Marvin was the rich hit-making singer and not his wife.

However, Marvin clearly shows both disbelief and criticism at the fees falling under his responsibilities, as noted by his questioning of why he had to pay for his wife’s lawyer (with a loving “my baby” to top the clear love Marvin still held for his then wife).

Marvin clearly doesn’t want to have to undergo the divorce, or if he has to, at least doesn’t want to have to pay for his wife’s petty legal fees.

Anna Gordy (Marvin’s first wife) had promised to stay with him forever and ever.

As seen by their divorce (to which this entire album is a response to), this was not to be. Instead it would ultimately be Anna leaving Marvin, night and day, not loving nor obeying.
