People often seem to view money as the solution to all their problems. I imagine if I get rich before I take care of everything else I need to work on in order to truly be happy / fulfilled, it wouldn’t do anything but make me a rich version of a man in need of healing.

I’m highlighting the use of vices to get high, specifically when that high is to make up for the lack of the presence of the “higher” self.

I’m not religious at all, so when I use terms such as ‘angels’ and ‘God’ etc. I tend to be using them very loosely / artistically.

We’re living in a crazy time right now and a lot of people are just trying to survive the chaos, even in situations where it has to go beyond just right and wrong.

This isn’t literally my first hand perspective, but I wanted to highlight that nuance as simply and subtly as I could, and give that voice and representation to anyone who can relate to it.

When the pandemic started, we had no idea how severe the blow was gonna be, but we felt it. We felt the fear, we felt the urgency, and we felt like we weren’t gonna be saved by anyone…

So what now?

Both the lead melody and vocal samples on this song came from the (2018) Kimbra track, also called ‘Real Life’.

The moment I heard that song, my producer ear instantly heard gold in it. I must’ve made the beat almost year before I figured out exactly what to do with it beyond that. The main thing for me was just to get the idea out because it felt so right.

‘Real Life’ is a single released by Nate Wiles in February of 2021. The self-produced record features percussions with a heavy, militant flavor, laid over a futuristic, dystopian melody and sprinkled with vocal chops, both sampled from the original Kimbra song of the same name.

The song’s lyrics explore nuanced societal themes which became most prevalent during the infamously chaotic and controversial introduction to the neo-20s, mainly under the stress of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Without giving explicit mention to the pandemic itself, Nate blends several perspectives – ranging from the disgruntled, the indignant, the disillusioned, and the revolutionary – into one fiery, frantic, cathartic expression.

In April of 2021, approaching 2 months after the song’s release, Nate proclaimed via Twitter that “[Real Life is] the theme song of 2020 – 20(??)”

This line leads into the hook on this song, which is something most people going through something similar to what Jonny is dealing with can relate to. He’s speaking for those who feel alone, misunderstood or unsatisfied with the world and their place in it; so when he checks out, he believes people who knew him and can relate to his music will continue to sing songs like this.

He wants to get high…as fuck.

Also, this could be interpreted as him wanting to open and ‘elevate’ his mind until his thoughts go far beyond those of people who base their whole mentality around religion instead of thinking for themselves.
