Mexico, officially known as the United Mexican States, has for most of its recent history been riddled with political corruption. That of the most significant form is with the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), reputed as using

electoral fraud, corruption, bribery, and repression when necessary to maintain control over individuals and groups

Most elections were shams, there were no challenges to the PRI’s hegemony and often the demands of the people were ignored in favor of the white oligarchy or the industrial powers which demanded industrialization with no regard for the peasants.

The PRI held an iron grip on the Mexican political system until the 1980s, around the time when the EZLN was formed (November 19, 1983 to be exact).

The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (in Spanish: Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, EZLN) was made known by its reaction to the the destructive neo-liberal policies of the North American “Free-Trade Agreement” and the horrible effects they would have on the Mexican populace. In addition, grinding poverty, horrible human rights for indigenous peoples, and the lack of a guarantee of basic survival sparked a relatively unarmed peasant uprising on January 1, 1994, the day NAFTA would take place.
