Throughout his career, Eminem has made his name on the controversial things he has said. These controversial things usually deal with attacking someone like his mom, his ex-wife, or a celebrity such as Christina Aguilera.

Yet, despite this, people always supported him, bought his music, and helped defend him against critics. Given all the shit he said, he does not understand how this is possible.

These lines set up a parallel between a disaster-stricken environment and Eminem’s relationship/emotional state. The tornado, a destructive natural phenomena, is a metaphor for the troubles Eminem faces. The use of torn instead of broken indicates a messier, more personal and thoughtful process.

By saying “Yesterday”, Eminem emphasizes that whoever went through this tragedy had survived it to tell the story. The morning, a homophone to the actual lyric “mourning”, insinuates that despite the damage, the sun will shine and the troubles will go away.

Em has talked about a plane crashing in his dreams before in the song When I’m Gone where he says the line:

The sky darkens, my life flashes, the plane that I was
Supposed to be on crashes and burns to ashes,
That’s when I wake up, alarm clock’s ringin', there’s birds singin'

It appears this may be a recurring dream Em has.

As for “I’ll always love you from afar”- he does forgive her, but hints that he is not ready to have her in his life again despite the fact that he does love her.

When he was younger, he was so blinded by rage that he never saw how much his mom did for him. Now that he’s older and more mature, he sees just how much work his mom had to put in, to provide for him and his brother. Thus, he finally thanks her for trying her best when given a rotten hand.

He thanks her for being his mom AND HIS DAD. She was his only parent, and therefore also had to do the things the father usually does in a traditional family.
