Gucci Mane, born Radric Davis Jr, is a Southern hip-hop and “trap” artist from Atlanta, Georgia.

On September 22nd, 2013, he released this succession of tweets explaining his long-term addiction to the drug “lean” (prescription promethazine cough syrup), apologizing for his recent string of erratic actions and vowing to get the help he needed to stay clean.

Rap Genius would like to acknowledge and honor Big Guwop for having the personal strength to admit his faults and to seek help in battling this addiction, which has killed other legends of the Dirty South.

Drinking promethazine-codeine cough syrup (lean, or as they used to call it, “sizzurp”) has powerful sedative effects, reduces nausea, and causes an intense high as the promethazine represses nervousness and anxieties (promethazine is actually prescribed for this purpose in some European countries)
However, the drug can also cause confusion, irritability, unpleasant tickling sensations in the skin (similar to the feeling of a limb “falling asleep,” the technical term for this is paresthesia) and in some cases seizures. Additionally, lean disrupts memory recall while it’s in the body, which Gucci Mane alludes to here.
Mac Miller and Lil Wayne are two other rappers that have admitted having problems with lean. Additionally, Johnny Jolly (defensive end for the Green Bay Packers) and JaMarcus Russel (former Oakland Raiders quarterback) have both faced legal problems for possession of promethazine and codeine.
And of course, lean can be fatally dangerous to those who overdose or do it far too frequently-it killed DJ Screw and his longtime affiliate Big Moe, and Pimp C of UGK suffocated in his sleep due to the medication in his system combined with his sleep apnea.

Bristol Dubstep/Glitch/“Bass Music” Producer Culprate and his frequent collaborator London MC Maksim made this burner as the title track for Culprate’s 2012 Nightmares In Reality EP.
The production features sea-shanty-esque woodwinds and (of course) grimy, heavy bass drops, while Maksim raps about a popular topic for British emcees: Getting fucked up on drugs.
