Her day seems to be getting worse. She has missed the bus and she knows she will be getting in trouble today at work for being late. This signifies how one bad decision is impacting her whole day. One negative act has the potential to affect another one in the same negative manner.

This also emphasizes how feeling negative influences the decisions made throughout the day and throughout life. Pessimists will always struggle to live each day as they find nothing but displeasure in everything.

Expressing misery in life is very common. Usually, it begins with one statement, followed by another, followed by another. Here, Dido doesn’t talk about the joy in drinking or how she enjoyed the taste of it. Instead, she complains she drank too much and she shouldn’t have because she has so many bills to pay for. Then she talks about having a hangover now, making her depressing morning even more depressing.

This song is mostly directed at Ms. Wright – aka Kolleen Wright, the mother of Andre’s baby mama Erykah Badu. But André chooses to replace her name with the generic “Ms. Jackson” so that this song would remain relevant to all of the baby mama mama’s in the world.

André revealed in an interview that he was too nervous to address Erykah’s mom face to face, so he decided to apologize indirectly through this song. Ms. Wright loved the song, as Erykah revealed:

“It was her chance at stardom. She got the airbrushed ‘Ms. Jackson’ shirt, the bobble-head doll. It was on her screensaver. She had the ringtone. That was her chance, so I just let it be.”

She will reach her peak of understanding what it means to live in this world with a faith so strong. As she has grown up, she will choose to wear the hijab, knowing all too well the consequences of it.

Afterwards, she will run out to her girls, choosing them to raise in a very similar way that Isam (her brother) has raised her. Life is tough but you never give up. You never quit. You don’t have to cry.

His sister is a 6 year old little girl. She is obviously crying over something petty and small, like little children do. Being a caring brother, he can’t stand seeing her like this. He is in fear how she will really cry when she understands reality for what it is. He talks about her being a worrier at such an early age. Her crying is also a reflection of the motions household members are feeding (people who grew up worrying because of their fear about growing up in a world full of hatred and prejudice).

Dinn = faith and way of life

Prejudice exists. Racism exists. These lines are pure satirical and at the same time, wishful thinking. Isam’s jobless because of the amount of ignorance and hatred out there. No one is hiring him because he is a Muslim. Later on, he even admits that he is hiding reality from her because he cannot bare telling her the truth and seeing her cry. He wants her to laugh.

He is lost. His faith is tested through the harsh times. Therefore, ironically, all he can do is recite the Quran (the holy book in Islam) and find a way to make peace with himself and his troubling concerns. In fact, that is precisely why the holy book exists:

Chapter 2, Line 2:

This is the Book in which there is no doubt, a guide for the righteous.

This whole verse is in fact very reminiscing of the most known surah (chapter) of the Quran, known as Surah Al Fatihah. It is the first chapter of the Quran and the surah is also recited in every round of all prayers, all 5 times a day (plus additional prayers).

Direct translation of the Surah:

  1. In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.
  2. Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds.
  3. The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
  4. Master of the Day of Judgment.
  5. It is You we worship, and upon You we call for help.
  6. Guide us to the straight path.
  7. The path of those You have blessed, not of those against whom there is anger, nor of those who are misguided.
