If you have talent, don’t do it for free, you could be making money. And if you don’t get paid with money to do the thing you’re good at then at least get paid with a “Thank You.”

Probably arises from B.o.B’s childhood where not much money was around the house. So he developed a “make money” mindset like most people in his situation do.

“Striking a nerve” refers to doing or saying something that gets people upset. Big Boi must have pissed his critics off with his lyrics. And “bending” refers to taking wide turns around street corners, preferably in a Cadillac. This terminology dates back to 1993’s “Player’s Ball”:

It goes simply ten and I’ll serve you then
Now we bend, the corner, in my Cadillac
My heart does not go pitty pat for no rat"

A play on the classic response that 4-year olds give when you ask them their name. Skoob is not only a master rapper, but also king of the playground

Not verified but – apparently this is a play on the name of an Irish high chief who was known as the Tain with his specific name in front of it. The Puddin" Tain was someone of not royal status but someone who had pretentions and was deridded with the name high King of the Puddings. later it became a Children’s rhyme of Scots-Irish origin.

What’s your name/?
Puddin' Tain.
Ask me again and I’ll tell you the same.

Pun on the notion of correcting misapprenhensions and lyrically mastering a record beat. Also a callback to the Beasties’ presciently-titled punk rock track “Time For Livin'” which begins:

Yeah, that’s right
It’s time to set the record straight

This is a quote from a 1647 book by Balthasar Gracian called The Art of Wordly Wisdom. The quote can be found in the the section of How to triumph over Rivals and Detractors:

It is not enough to despise them, though this is often wise: a gallant bearing is the thing. One cannot praise a man too much who speaks well of them who speak ill of him. There is no more heroic vengeance than that of talents and services which at once conquer and torment the envious. Every success is a further twist of the cord round the neck of the ill-affected, and an enemy’s glory is the rival’s hell. The envious die not once, but as oft as the envied wins applause. The immortality of his fame is the measure of the other’s torture: the one lives in endless honour, the other in endless pain. The clarion of Fame announces immortality to the one and death to the other, the slow death of envy long drawn out.

The line was later sampled on the GZA track “Fame”

The 10th track off the “Legend of the Liquid Sword” – the 4th solo studio album by Wu Tang’s GZA. The whole track is based around wordplay off the names of other celebrities. It follows in the footsteps of songs like Labels and Publicity.

The album was released December 10, 2002

In 1996, Chino XL spit a bar on No Complex using this same idea:

A play on hearse and Hearst. Patty Hearst was the granddaughter of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst and great-granddaughter of millionaire George Hearst.

Patty gained infamy in 1974 when she was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) and eventually joined her captors in furthering their cause. Apprehended after having taken part in a bank robbery with other SLA members, Hearst was imprisoned for almost 2 years before her sentence was commuted by President Jimmy Carter.
