This could also be referencing to the cultivation of cotton in plantations by using slaves. The fact that this is “forgotten” suggests that white people have not repented, and are ignorant of their own horrible actions which make up their current “american” culture.This is reinforced by the core idea of the song, and other similar lyrics.
