Apart from the obvious (hustling and ending up becoming a famous rapper), there’s some heavy juxtaposition in this line, maybe intentionally. J Dilla is known for having a discography that is anything but your average braggadocio about “making scrilla.”

Ross could be saying here that he originally wanted to be a more intellectual-type artist making tracks with J Dilla, instead of rapping about money and gangbanging.

If you’ve ever actually listened to J Dilla’s lyrics you would know that they are in fact very much about making money and the acquisition of material things. Slum Village’s “Get Dis Money” and “The $” from Ruff Draft are examples where it’s even obvious in the title. I guess whoever wrote this was thinking about Common and the Soulquarians but apart from that it doesn’t make any sense to me.
