Nellie Bly documented in her book that the patients deemed most dangerous were tied together with ropes. Of course this would only make them more insane being treated like an animal, but people were so ignorant/stupid that they let it happen.

it also shows that they are abusing people against their will pretending it’s for their own good.
then use the argument that they are insane to cover the illness of the “patient” and pretending he is doing bettet

Many patients were perfectly capable of sane thoughts, and usually weren’t really crazy at all. From the character’s point of view, he/she talks to his/her peers about how they’re being treated, and how this can only bring about a response that’s just as violent.

These lines demonstrate how patients in the sanitarium are treated. The narrator explains how they aren’t in control of what happens to them and that the doctors or workers have all of the power in this hierarchal situation. This can be related to Rosenhan’s fake patient experiment and ideas surrounding depersonalization. In his study, it is stated how the environment these patients are kept in influence depersonalization, self-labeling, and feelings of powerlessness, and are therefore counter-therapeutic (Rosenhan, 1973). As for the second line, it further demonstrates the effects of labelling— if they’re going to treat you like you’re crazy or violent, that’s how you’re going to act.
