Frank is so invested in this person that he would do anything for them, even where no one can see, just to show that it doesn’t matter if anyone sees his efforts, he just wants to do the best he can for this person.
He is desperate and will do anything to please his lover in the dark. He knows he can’t be with this person all the time (the light) but he can be with them in the dark where no one knows.
Perhaps a loose metaphor for being in the closet. He’s in love with a closeted man, so anything he does for him has to be out of the public eye.
Frank could be insecure and afraid to show his feelings in the clear daylight, thus saying “I’d do anything for you (in the dark). Meaning that he can only show his affection when he is alone. Whether this affection be toward a loved one or someone else.

Also musically, I believe this line is a reference to ‘I’d Do Anything’ from the musical ‘Oliver!’. The rhythm and general melodic shape of the setting of the text (“I’d do anything for you”) is very similar. In the context of the musical, this is the song Oliver and the other boys sing to Nancy, in a sweet, childish display of devotion. This purity and love is depicted in Frank’s melody here, but instantly undermined by the echoing ‘in the dark’; the love remains closeted, hidden, unresolved.

i think the people saying its a reference to oliver is a bit of a stretch, maybe if “in the dark” was a part of the lyrics of that oliver song it would be closer but “id do anything for you” isnt exactly the most original line. also, it could take on the same meaning as is used in othello, when Emilia and Desdemona are talking in 4.3. i dont feel like writing out the context of the scene but Emilia basically says that she would cheat on her partner in the dark as opposed to the “heavenly light”. in this context it could mean he would have an affair with the love interest in the lyrics. could be a stretch, but i think its fairly valid.
Or maybe he simply means he’ll be by this person’s side no matter how bad things get, even “in the dark”. This theory also ties up as the next track “Godspeed” starts with “I will always love you how I do, let go of a prayer for you”. I think he is just showing how strong of a commitment he has for this person.
Also this might tie in to the line “It’s just a fond farewell to a friend” meaning they are no more together, but still Frank feels really strong for this person and has already given his “sweet word”/commitment.
Frank is alluding to a situation where a guy has catfished or lied to his lover that is attracted to woman hiding behind the pretense of a woman & will do whatever to please his lover as long as it’s “in the dark” because if allowed the guy will never know a difference.
Very commonly online gay or bisexual guys will make profiles pretending to be a girl to get interaction from guys that they wouldn’t get otherwise. These guys know that they could never formally meet in person or for sex but if the guy was willing to meet up “in the dark” he may have a chance to have intercourse with him without him knowing the reality of the situation.
Of course Frank is only REFERENCING this situation because he understands how gay or bisexual men feel as once upon of time before he was famous he may have thought about or tried to do the same thing.
Sounds crazy but I promise this is on the money as I’ve been catfished by a gay male & “he” offered sex but only “in the dark”.
I think “the dark” refers to being out of the spotlight of the public eye. He is caught in a bind whereby he wants prove his feelings, whilst acknowledging these actions will remain secret.
In the dark, where one can’t see, he would do anything for his lover. Even if he doesn’t know what that thing is, he would still do it, because he loves them that much

Seigfried is centered around an existential crisis that Frank experiences in the wake of a breakup. Frank undergoes an emotional and spiritual transformation over the course of the song and can now return to his lover, able to express what he was unable to before. All these thoughts and manifestations have helped Frank realize how much he cares about this person
Could be a reference to Lady Gaga ‘Dance In The Dark’. The speaker is afraid and insecure, so will only have sex with the love interest in the dark. ‘Dance In The Dark’ also has a few suicide references.
I think it’s also a reference to the musical Oliver, from the song where “I’d do anything for you” is the chorus
Repeating something over and over again is a tactic to make yourself or others believe a lie, and is used often in song writing. Frank is trying to convince himself that he’d do anything for this person, when in reality he’s “in the dark” and wouldn’t actually do anything if it came down to it.
Frank Ocean here recites the line “I’d do anything, for you. Anything for you” as heard in the British musical Oliver!. This is the same “I’d Do Anyhting” that Jay-Z sampled on his 2000 single, Anything.
Frank is imposing that he will do anything for the person he loves just as long as it’s lowkey or no one don’t know
The way Frank Ocean sings “I’d do anything, for you” he is clearly referencing “I’d Do Anything” from the British film Oliver!. The same segment of the film Jay-Z sampled for his song “Anything” off of Beanie Sigel’s album The Truth
I think it goes back to the line about how he’s “not brave”. He’d do anything for his lover, but only in the dark (Depressed state?) where he cannot be seen or heard.
He’s contradicting himself as he’s saying he’ll do anything for this person but only on his own terms (in the dark) because he’s too frightened tour himself in a vulnerable position.
I thought this was a reference to Sufjan’s For the Widows in Paradise
