The song starts off with Alex writing down his phone number, hoping to give it to a girl he has seen at the bar. Usually he doesn’t have the confidence to do something like this, relaying that he never wrote it down before.

Scenes like this are very common in movies, with a guy attempting to pick up a girl, sometimes successfully, other times failing miserably. Alex worries that his confidence will fade the minute he goes to speak to her since he hasn’t had that much liquid courage.

This is one of the many times Turner would sing about picking up a girl that has caught his eye early in the Arctic Monkeys career.

This girl is clearly attractive and widely sought after, but isn’t settling down with any single man (including our narrator). Since they can’t have her for their own, the various men respond by trying to make her ache for them. Just being with her isn’t enough; they want to hurt her in the same way they’ve been hurt by her.

Our narrator clearly isn’t immune to this impulse, previously assuring her that “she’s just one in 24"—not nearly as important as she thinks.

When the three directors were on tour promoting ‘'Airplane!’‘ they had a contest of sorts, Mr. Kilmer said, to see ’‘who could get the most grotesque lie into print.’‘ One of them, asked by a European journalist what was the latest craze in California, mentioned ’‘skeet surfing.’‘

Thus the ZAZ trio decided to combine skeet shooting and surfing. A combination so ridiculously inviable (standing while riding a wave is already hard enough without having to shoot at the same time – and add that sand and water clog the shotguns…) that it becomes comedy gold.

Nice guys finish last is a common phrase used to describe how nice guys often have trouble getting a girl or getting ahead in certain industries. Nice guys are often viewed as boring by women and often fail to get ahead in industries that require a killer instinct to get to the top.

Given the Foxboro Hot Tubs nostalgic garage rock sound, the chorus most likely pays homage to either “Ride Sally Ride” by Lou Reed or “Mustang Sally” by Wilson Pickett, both of which feature the lyric “ride Sally ride”. A cover of Pickett’s song was used in the movie The Commitments, and can be seen below.

It is clear Sally is willing to take risks, much like the other characters on this album. The bike can be taken as a literal joyride, or a clever euphemism, as used by Eminem & Skylar Grey in “C'mon Let Me Ride”, basically urging Sally to have sex with him.

James Dean was a famous American actor and a cultural icon known for his role in Rebel Without A Cause as well as pioneering the greaser image popular in the 1950s. Dean died tragically in 1955 in a car accident. Dean has been mentioned by D-WHY before as well as Childish Gambino.

Kurt Cobain was the lead singer of Nirvana, the famous American band known for being at the forefront of the Grunge subgenre. Cobain was tragically addicted to heroin, as his constant battles with addiction would become a factor in his suicide. Cobain is often mentioned by rappers, and is remembered as a symbol of the disenchanted youth of the 1990s.

D-WHY strives to have the same cultural impact as these embattled icons.

Here, D-WHY plays off the double meaning of lay. When vacationing in Hawaii it is customary to receive a lei, a necklace made of flowers, upon arrival.

Lay is also used to mean getting laid. It seems D needs a vacation and some T and A after all the stress he’s been put under.

It is much easier to lie to someone over the phone (even easier over text) due to the fact that you don’t have to look them in the eyes. Eye movement can be a key indicator whether or not someone is lying, as your eyes naturally move when you are accessing your memory as opposed to avoiding eye contact when one is lying. He is losing trust in this girl, and can’t tell if she is being faithful because her voice doesn’t falter on the phone. Without seeing her, there is no way to tell whether or not she is being truthful.

Someone has trust issues!

A cherry bomb is a sphere shaped firework. Although they are not deadly, the explosion is still significant. It seems this girl has a sharp tongue.

Furthermore, a cherry bomb is a type of drink, continuing the theme of drinking and partying.

Also, “Cherry Bomb” is a song by the all girls punk rock group The Renegades. The band saw their height of popularity in the 1970s and recently a movie was made about the band starring Kristen Stewart. The Runaways partied hard, just like this girl!
