Scott Summers is the real name of Cyclops from The X-Men comics. He wears a ruby quartz visor to prevent the destruction of everything around him because his eyes fire a powerful laser beam when uncovered

Like Cyclops, if Lupe were to give us a glimpse of his soul by removing his “stunner shades” (slang for “fancy sunglasses”), we would all be destroyed

You can create a perfect plan, but there are always going to be things that are out of your control. He and Erykah might have had the rest of their lives planned out, but all it takes is one bad break and the whole plan is ruined.

This sentiment of this line is similar to that of New Edition’s hit 1988 single “Can You Stand the Rain”:

Sunny days, everybody loves them
Tell me, baby, can you stand the rain?

Big Boi lets the ghetto youth know that in the age of the internet you have a much better chance making it big through starting up a small business than you do from selling drugs. So instead of living from re-up to re-up (to “re-up” is to resupply one’s drug supply for peddling), Big Boi advises them to look at the big picture and try to make something of themselves.

Big Boi’s first son, Bamboo Patton, was born on February 18, 2000. Three years later, Big Boi got him to spit a freestyle on OutKast’s 2003 album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.

But here, Bamboo was still “on the way”—a sign that this verse was recorded long before it was released, given that “B.O.B.” actually came out seven months after he was born.

His daughter, Jordan Patton, was born in 1995, shortly before OutKast’s ATLiens dropped.

When Big Boi says “never turn my back on my kids for them,” he’s saying that no matter what happens with the women in his life, he’ll be a devoted father.

This was especially relevant at the time of Bamboo’s birth, because the mother of his son was not his longtime girlfriend (and future wife) Sherita, who was the mother of his daughter Jordan. Big Boi was likely trying to balance his relationships with both of his baby’s mothers.

Big Boi with his kids: Cross (born 2001), Jordan (born 1995), and Bamboo (born 2000)

T.I., also known as “T-I-P”, has proclaimed himself the “King of the South”

T.I. sold drugs when he was young (he’s been convicted), so he presumably tipped the scaled (literally, figuratively) with coke

This is a double entendre apart from the TI description given above, he is talking about his summit on the summit kilimanjaro climb as the ‘tip’ of the mountain and to ‘scale’ the mountain.

Lupe is picking on Rick Ross as the commercial flipside to Lupe’s more intellectual brand; I guess Lupe is not a fan of Pretty Ricky!

In the video for Run-DMC and Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” remix – which Run-DMC was heavily criticized for participating in – the two groups are placed on opposite sides of the same wall (Steven Tyler eventually busts through the wall with his mic stand, yeah!)

For once, “Buddha” doesn’t mean “a bag of weed”. It means the actual Buddha, who once said of true love:

If you want your loved ones to be happy, you must learn to understand their sufferings and aspirations. When you understand, you will know how to relieve their sufferings and how to help them fulfill their aspirations. That is true love
