The Dungeon Family is a collection of various artists and groups from the ATL. Most notable among the members are (of course) Outkast, Goodie Mob, and Organized Noize. Big Boi warns rivals that they better watch themselves when they come through the A-Town because the Dungeon fam runs this city.

Big Boi lists the failures of his competitors in these lines, proving that they are not as calculating as he is:

  • Buying an ounce worth of drugs is a much better value than buying $20 worth (“a dub”)
  • Sometimes throwing a punch to prove your manhood isn’t always a good idea (especially if the guy you’re throwing punches at is bigger than you)
  • No matter how badly you want to stay at the office to eat lunch, it is never a good idea to skip a lunch date with your girl

Few things going on here:

  • Big Boi is comparing the literal lashes he puts on his competition with a three piece whip to the hardcore sex he has with his competition’s daughters
  • “Taco” is also slang for vagina, which is located “south of the border” on a girl, just like the Mexican food chain Taco Bell
  • “Yo quiero Taco Bell!” – Spanish for “I want Taco Bell” – was the company’s slogan when this song came out
  • “hitting the border” can also refer to having sex with a girl then running away after

So the best way to translate this line would be to say that Big Boi has sex with his competition’s daughter that is just as passionate as the beat downs he puts on them, then never calls her again when he’s done.

He wishes he is happy but he isn’t and it upsets him. He doesn’t lie to everyone that he is, he is telling us right there that he’s not

The first Man on the Moon was about Cudi’s dreams, not his reality. So while the majority of the songs on the album may seem upbeat and happy, his real life is quite the opposite.

Cudi may also be referring to this state of mind where even though you want to kill yourself every day, you still continue to pretend to everyone around you that you’re happy. Most people who actually commit suicide never shows any feelings of sadness to their entourage, they just do it. That’s the saddest lie…

At times, Cudi feels so down that there seems only the ultimate option left; his depression is so deep that only killing himself would bring him peace. Thankfully, Cudi learned that taking his own life is pointless.

Cudi suggests that he hasn’t done cocaine at this point. However, he would soon resort to using the drug. In 2010, he admitted that he did indeed have a cocaine problem, and his drug abuse is the central theme of his sophomore album.

When he was asked about the shock value of these lines in an interview with HipHopDX, Cudi said:

Well it’s like, my main thing is to paint these pictures and thoughts from my mind and how I process certain things […] I wanted to say a lot of things that pop up in my brain and in my thought patterns that were gonna shock people. I wanted to immediately shock people right at the beginning of the album. So it was only right for me to just address those type of things and keep it all the way honest [from the beginning], and have people really ready for whatever. Because the rest of the album is you’re ready for whatever after that song, ‘cause it sets it up.

He lives in state of isolated depression and dismay, almost like the dark side of the moon, which is a complete opposite to Cancun. Cancun is a popular, vibrant, vacation spot in Mexico

Cudi refers to one of its main inspirations: Pink Floyd, with Dark Side of the Moon being one of their albums. The reference is intentional, since the actual physical facet of the moon is called the far side of the moon.

Basically CuDi is saying he is silently struggling with his depression while he sees everyone else happily living life.

Some clever wordplay here – to be “in the cut” is to be in a secluded spot, but Cudi drinks alcohol to numb the pain of losing his father. Similarly, Rubbing alcohol is a common antiseptic used on minor cuts.

Also, in Cleveland is the Reason, off of A Kid Named Cudi, a mixtape released prior to Man on the Moon, Scott tells the listener that he drives Cutlass Supreme, and he’s spoken about driving drunk in the past

Thus, “In the Cut” could also mean riding in his Cutlass.

Cudi is referring to magic mushrooms containing the psychoactive substance psilocybin. User reports say that when using them, it’s common to be under the impression that you can deal with a lot of things at the same time, see the bigger perspective on things.

There’s also the notion that you quite literally see some spacey shit when you’re tripping. Cudi is referring to opening his mind or “third eye” to philosophical notions, not just visuals.

An eighth of shrooms is 3.5 grams, half of that being 1.75 grams. This is normally the quantity that a first-time user would ingest. Cudi advises to take a little less if you’re just getting started.

As Cudi has posted about on Twitter:

“Start off w a lil, see how u feel, then eat more if ur good. Demons come out when you do psychedelics if you’re not emotionally in a good place.”

This is a clear reference to Jay Z’s “99 Problems” hook. The obvious meaning is that all Cudi’s problems are with women. Alternatively, it could be understood that all his problems are really bad ones.

Naturally, Cudi wishes that he was already a successful rapper like Jay or Kanye West, who asked to be called “Martin Louis King Jr.” in 2009. At the time this song was written, he wasn’t massive like those two – but he had collaborated with them both.

Cudi grew up in Cleveland, but moved to New York in the mid 2000’s to further his music career. Jay Z is famously from Brooklyn.
