In the videos for “Tell Your Friends”, “Starboy”, and “False Alarm,” Abel either kills himself or is killed by his companion, showing obvious signs of suicidal ideation.

After his high profile breakups with Bella Hadid and Selena Gomez, he’s reverting back to unhealthy coping patterns.

“His happiness is never real” could also be a reference to a similar lyric in another from his 2013 album Kiss Land:

”And you think your happiness is real”
–from “Professional”

The line samples a 1971 live performance of the song “Vapor Barato” by Brazilian singer Gal Costa. The lyrics, “Oh, minha honey baby,” are performed in Portuguese and translate to the endearing line:

Oh, my honey baby!

Costa repeats the line in the outro of “Vapor Barato,” with the sampled portion appearing around 7:48 and her howling cheer at 8:02.

Frank Ocean samples an excerpt of dialogue by the legendary American drag queen Crystal LaBeija from the 1968 documentary The Queen. The film captures the journey of drag queens competing in the Miss All-America Camp Beauty Contest held at New York City’s Town Hall on February 13, 1967.

The Fader contributor Myles Tanzer noted this clip as Ocean’s way of paying homage to drag, particularly to ballroom culture. After The Queen, LaBeija would co-found the Royal House of LaBeija in 1972, which continues to be a pioneering force in the LGBTQ+ ballroom scene.

At Vice, contributor Mikelle Steel contextualizes Ocean’s use of LaBeija’s dialogue:

But to use such a specific clip nods to a recognition of [Ocean’s] queer identity. LGBTQ visibility has long been linked to drag culture with their outsized presence in the Stonewall riots, but here Frank is aligning himself more specifically with ballroom culture, a source of pride, and for most unity amongst LGBTQ youth of color specifically.

In a 2019 interview with W Magazine, reporter Diane Solway asked Ocean, “You sampled the ballroom culture legend Crystal LaBeija on a track on Endless; what’s interesting to you about drag ballroom culture and those particular personalities?”

Well, it kind of reminds me of home. The music is related. It’s very alive, soulful, unapologetic. There’s a duality to the movement. It’s so physical—it’s tough to do some of those moves—but it also has a theatrical, feminine quality that’s beautiful to see in motion. Crystal LaBeija is about her voice and her reads and her look and just being dead serious and fully engaged with who she was and not backing down. You know, House of LaBeija came to my 30th birthday party in L.A. and shut it down. I did runway.

Much like flowers, humans lose the freshness of their youth as they age. Frank hopes that he lives long enough for them to see him while he’s still in bloom with his partner, and finally when he starts to age, so that he can pass his knowledge and experience onto his children.

Frank had to move to LA from New Orleans, and was actually studying at the University of New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina caused irreversible damage to his studio, arguably leading him on the path he is on now.

While this could be in reference to his humble beginnings, it was reported in 2014 that he owned a duplex in the French Quarter of the city, which he was supposedly renting out to Solange.

Frank’s father, who he hasn’t seen since that day, did indeed leave him and his mother when Frank was six. He later tried to sue Frank, to which Frank responded on Twitter by calling him a"weak man" and jokingly saying that it was for all the child support his Dad owed him. Studies have actually shown that heterosexuals have a tendency to “wipe away the gay” as if it were contageous.

With incidents like these, it’s no wonder Frank’s mother didn’t want him to become a musician like his father had been.

On June 12th, 2016, 50 Queer, and notably Latinx, individuals lost their lives after shooter Omar Mateen opened fire at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. 53 others were also reported as injured following the attack, making it the worst American mass shooting in the last 25 years.

A man calling himself Mateen’s lover later said that the shooting was an act of revenge for Mateen on Latino men, after he had discovered a man he had slept with was HIV positive. Several other regulars of Pulse were also cited as saying they’d seen Mateen at the club a few times prior to the attack, suggesting that he was a closeted homosexual.

In certain countries where being queer is illegal (you can find a list of such countires here ), LGBT+ people are often imprisoned, tortured, and murdered for being openly homosexual, often with Religious grounds being used to enforce brutality, such as Sharia Law.

More specifically, pictures emerged in mainstream publications last December with members of Daesh taking out those same horrific actions on queer people in Syria.

Janelle Monae was among those calling for a challenge of homophobic religious rhetoric in the wake of the shootings, making the connection between that same rhetoric and the violence against Queer people worldwide.

Janelle Monae speaks for a lot of people. In fact, she explained that the Android character is a new ‘Other’ that are treated as second or third class citizens for not being human out of fear from humans themselves.

The fear of the unknown or unfamiliar is often touted as a source of misunderstanding when it comes to minorities and how they are treated, which is what makes Cindi Mayweather’s struggle as the Android Messiah relatable to so many people.
